When it comes to heart health, understanding the electrical system that keeps the heart beating rhythmically is crucial. This specialised field, known as electrophysiology, focuses on diagnosing and treating heart rhythm disorders, also called arrhythmias.

Leading the way in this field is Dr Brian Vezi and Dr Haroon Mia, our electrophysiologists who specialises in identifying and managing abnormalities in the heart’s electrical pathways. Arrhythmias occur when the electrical signals that control the heartbeat do not follow their normal pathway. This can cause the heart to beat too quickly, too slowly, or irregularly.

Patients often describe symptoms such as palpitations, fluttering in the chest, skipped beats, or a racing heartbeat.

Through advanced diagnostic tests such as electrophysiology studies, they can pinpoint where these electrical disruptions occur in the heart. Once identified, treatment options may include medication, cardioversion, or specialised procedures such as catheter ablation, which helps correct the abnormal electrical pathway. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential, as untreated arrhythmias can weaken the heart over time and reduce its ability to pump blood effectively throughout the body.

One condition that the both Electrophysiologists frequently treat is atrial fibrillation a common abnormal heart rhythm where the upper chambers of the heart (atria) beat extremely fast, causing them to contract out of sync with the lower chambers (ventricles).

Fortunately, the heart has a natural “gate” called the atrioventricular (AV) node that limits how many of these rapid signals reach the ventricles. Even so, atrial fibrillation can still lead to uncomfortable symptoms and potential complications if left untreated.

Dr Haroon Mia and Dr Brian Vezi provide specialised care for patients experiencing heart rhythm disorders, using advanced technology and targeted treatments to restore the heart’s natural rhythm and improve overall cardiovascular health.
