Tweet tweet … a weekend in the bush for birders

Enjoy a birding weekend with well-known South African zoologist and ornithologist, James Rawdon.

James Rawdon, who loves sharing his passion for birds, obtained his bird-ringing license in 2012 and has been ringing birds at various sites in and around KwaZulu-Natal ever since. His favourite birds originally included raptors and owls, but ringing opened a new vision, and now having conducted more than 200 ringing sessions, ringing over 6 000 birds of about 270 different species, many more birds are on his list of favourites!

“Bird ringing allows you to see the birds up close” says Rawdon, “and it provides a wonderful opportunity to teach children and adults about birds, conservation and the preservation of their natural resources”.

And what better environment for this wonderful opportunity than Thanda Safari, a 5-star private game reserve, set in ancient land steeped in Zulu history in the northern reaches of Zululand, KwaZulu Natal where the Great Rift Valley meets the Lebombo Mountains, and home to more than 400 different bird species.

This is the second Bird Ringing exercise with James Rawdon; it’ll take place from Friday to Sunday April 9 to 11 April, and costs from R2995 a person a night, sharing, which accommodation at Thanda Tented Camp (spacious colonial safari-style tents, each with private viewing deck and en-suite bathroom), two game drives daily with guide and tracker, a Bird Ringing exercise on Saturday or Sunday morning (each guest will get to spend time with James and the Thanda Wildlife team), all meals and selected local beverages (soft drinks, house wines, spirits and beers) .

The conservation levy of R200 a person is excluded, as are gratuities and all items of a personal nature. Road transfers from Durban’s King Shaka International and Richards Bay airports can be arranged.

Booking is essential –  to make your reservations contact: Thanda Safari on email [email protected], phone 032-586-0149 or thandasafari.co.za
