FASHION with purpose

Non-profit organisation Vintage with Love is dedicated to improving education and literacy, one gently-worn item at a time.

Vintage with Love (VWL) was the brainchild of two fashion-forward do-gooders; Leigh Ord and Jacquie Myburgh Chemaly, who knew that pre-loved, gently-worn goodies hiding in the back of everyone’s cupboards had the power to make a real difference. They hosted their first sale in 2013, and what was meant to just be a garage sale for charity turned into a remarkably successful event, bringing in thousands of shoppers and a lot of good for the team’s beloved charities.

Community is also key for the team, and this, says Tracey, brings with it a wonderful sense of fulfilment. “We strive to keep things bright, bold and fun. VWL doesn’t just stop at sales, we’re constantly hosting events and encouraging people to become involved. Collection events, fundraisers, First Thursdays, Padel events and lunches for literacy to name a few!”
The project celebrates its tenth anniversary this year, and has raised millions of rands for charities so far. The team would love to see its success continue.

“We must get South Africans to donate their once-loved items and shop up a gently-worn storm! Both make a remarkable difference,” says Tracey. “We’ve worked hard to create an online presence that people enjoy and trust, placing a huge amount of value in the quality of items which are listed and sold. We are always looking for new ways to tell more people about VWL and to urge everyone to clear out their cupboards for a very good cause.”

The organisation has grown considerably over the years, having recently launched its first permanent store in Cape Town where shoppers get the chance to see some behind-the-scenes sorting of new stock. And, for Tracey, the work she and her team does is deeply rewarding.

“We’re all about sustainable fashion, we contribute to a circular economy and urge people to cast an eye towards gently-used treasures, all while having fun along the way.”
