Myths about Aesthetic medicine

Non-surgical beauty treatments are becoming more and more popular for their ability to achieve a natural look with little downtime. Even so, there are a lot of misconceptions surrounding aesthetic medicine. Dr Shameera Nowbuth of The Dermal Studio in Umhlanga helps us debunk some of the most common myths.

1. Aesthetic treatments will make my face look unnatural
“Medical aesthetic treatments are designed to enhance and rejuvenate one’s facial features to get a natural look,” says Dr Nowbuth. But, in order to achieve optimal results, she says that the treatment should always be performed by a skilled doctor who is registered with the HPCSA. She also stresses the importance of a thorough consultation in which your goals and expectations can be discussed, along with the limitations of your chosen treatment. “Treatment should be approached in a holistic manner,” she encourages.

2. Aesthetic treatments are dangerous

It is important to understand that when it comes to injectable treatments, there is always some degree of risk involved. For this reason, it’s essential that you let your doctor know about your medical history, and to raise any questions or concerns before you go ahead with a treatment.

3. Aesthetic treatments are painful
If you’re concerned about what your treatment will feel like, Dr Nowbuth says there really is nothing to be worried about. “We have many ways to ensure a pain-free experience,” she says. “We often use a topical or local anaesthetic, and also offer tools and techniques for added comfort.”

4. Aesthetic treatments are only for people over the age of 30
“Aesthetic treatments, such as medical grade skin peels and facials, can be done as early as one’s teenage years,” says Dr Nowbuth. “Injectable aesthetic treatments, however, should only be performed from the age of 18 onwards.” She goes on to say that it’s not necessary to wait until your thirties to try aesthetic medicine. “Preventative treatments from the mid-twenties are advisable to maintain optimum skin health and facial form. In fact, the earlier one starts with aesthetic treatments, the fewer procedures are required as one ages.”

5. Anyone can perform aesthetic treatments
In South Africa, only medical professionals registered by the HPCSA are allowed to administer aesthetic treatments like fillers, threads, anti-wrinkle injections and biostimulators. That said, even treatments like facials, microneedling and laser should be performed by a suitably qualified individual.
