Top 5 reasons to shark cage dive in Cape Town

Cape Town is an attractive tourism destination mainly due to its spectacular landscape, oceans and its bustling city life. For many years, Cape Town has been home to shark cage diving and has become a top global destination to see sharks.

Here are the top 5 reasons to shark cage dive in cape town:

  1. Most sharks are endangered
With the disappearance of the Great White Shark in Cape Town, once an area with one of the highest population densities, it’s never been more apparent that sharks are facing real threats of extinction. Most sharks are listed as being endangered or near threatened and shark cage diving grants guests the privilege of seeing these living fossils.
  2. Voted as one of the best activities to do in Cape Town
Shark cage diving in Cape Town is listed as one of the top activities to do on the Trip Advisor “Top 10 Best Attractions” list. They have an average 4.5-star rating and come highly recommended by travellers. You will find shark cage diving on almost all “Must Do” activities in Cape Town.
  3. Close to Cape Town and other nearby must do activities
When you are travelling, you can bet that you probably won’t have enough time to do all the things you want to do, time is of the essence! Shark cage diving in Cape Town is a short 45-minutes’ drive from Cape Town city centre to Simon’s Town which is home to the famous Boulders Beach Penguin Colony and the South African Navy. A short drive along the coastline takes you to the breathtaking Cape of Good Hope also known as Cape Point. Once your shark cage diving trip is over, operators such as Apex Shark Expeditions offer land tours and wine tours to end the day.
  4. Various wildlife and adventures on the sea
Shark cage diving isn’t like going to the aquarium, you get to not only witness the sharks, swim with them (in a cage), but you also get to go on an adventurous boat ride filled with an array of marine animals and birds. Depending on the time of the year, guests can see dolphins, whales, Cape Gannets, Black Cormorants and White Cormorants, as well as the African Penguin which can be observed all year round. Another exciting activity on this excursion is, Seal Island. If time and weather conditions allow, guests are taken to Seal Island to observe the Cape Fur Seal colony, consisting of over 65,000 seals.
  5. Great White Sharks might be making their return
In an exciting turn of events, the long-awaited return of the Great White Shark to Cape Town may be nearby. There were 4 new Great White sightings in False Bay from 27 November to the 3rd of December 2023. The first 2 sightings were in Muizenberg by Shark Spotters and the other 2 sightings were near Smitswinkel Bay by spear fisherman and a local water user just from Roman Rock lighthouse. These sightings are a positive sign and the first sightings in the last 4 years!  You will want to be on the boat when these massive apex predators make a comeback!

This adrenaline filled activity is action packed, educational and simply unforgettable! Just by reading some of the reviews on trip advisor, it is easy to see why this is rated as one of the best experiences and a travel highlight. So, whether it is your birthday, anniversary, or you are on honeymoon or holiday, this adventure of a lifetime awaits you.

Cape Town cannot wait to host you!
