Home invasion: How to prevent it from happening and what to do if it does

While we all want to feel safe in our homes, it is key not to become complacent and to remain vigilant in order to deter potential safety threats.

Take note of these three safety precautions and know what to do, should you find yourself in a situation where your property’s security has been breached:

  • Stay alert: Check your alarm system regularly to make sure all the zones work. Do a monthly perimeter check to ensure that there are no low overhanging branches over the wall or fence surrounding your property. Remember to close garage doors during the day and don’t leave any unattended doors or windows open around your home.
  • Casual guarding: Although no one wants to have to think about security when they are having fun, the reality exists that criminals are aware that functions and parties generally mean easy pickings and easy targets. Sometimes the mere presence of a security officer with a panic button is enough to deter would-be criminals.
  • Be prepared: Speak to your family members, staff and tenants about possible scenarios so they can be aware of what to do should they ever find themselves confronted with a home invasion.

In the unfortunate event that a criminal is able to force their way into your home, it is advised to do the following:

  • Keep calm: The first few minutes of a home invasion are generally the most dangerous. Stay as calm as possible and to try to evaluate the situation. If you don’t feel your life is under imminent threat, don’t fight back.
  • Let it happen: Try your best to accept your situation and give your assailants time to take any material possessions they want. Speak only if spoken to, and try to keep your answers short and to the point.
  • Pay attention: Be conscious not to stare at the assailants but try nevertheless to get a good look at them. Try to pick up any details about their appearance or clothes and listen for any names.
