We visited Dermology in Ballito to experience their innovative BOXI treatment, a unique combination of MOXI laser and Broadband Light (BBL) laser therapy designed to combat pigmentation and rejuvenate the skin.

We were welcomed to Dermology by clinic manager and qualified aesthetic laser therapist Liza Parker who explained how laser therapy works and why BOXI is proving so popular. The procedure combines two advanced skin treatments – MOXI, which can be used on all skin tones; and BBL, which treats conditions caused by ageing and sun damage – to deliver dramatic tonal and textural improvements in a relatively short space of time.

DAY 1: THE TREATMENT
The treatment itself takes around an hour, although Liza also provides a very thorough consultation beforehand in which she explains exactly what to expect from the procedure.
Before beginning treatment, Liza applied a numbing cream. Then, she started with BBL, which uses the power of light to target the pigment within the skin. In fact, it’s the fastest way to treat pigment, sun damage and age spots anywhere on the body. This process is a little uncomfortable, but not particularly painful.
Next, MOXI is delivered in the form of fractionated laser energy. This creates micro-coagulation zones which the body then repairs, replacing damaged cells with fresh new ones. MOXI is designed to provide tonal and textural improvements to your face with low downtime, resulting in skin renewal. MOXI is considerably more uncomfortable than BBL – it stings on sensitive parts of the face – but the treatment is quick, taking only a few minutes to complete.

For about an hour after treatment, the skin felt warm, like a mild sunburn, and appeared flushed. There was also slight swelling. Liza applied a soothing serum and sunscreen and provided a cooling spray to be used throughout the next few days.

DAY 2: CALMING DOWN
By the next day, the redness had diminished, but the skin still felt slightly sensitive. Tiny dark spots and a rough texture began to form on the treated areas—this is a normal part of the healing process.

The Dermology team provided post-treatment care instructions and products, explaining that it’s important to keep the skin hydrated and to apply sunscreen diligently. It’s also crucial to avoid sun exposure as much as possible.

DAY 3-4: SKIN RENEWING
Around this time, the skin started to peel slightly as the treated areas began to shed the damaged outer layers. The rough texture gradually gave way to fresh, new skin. By this stage, there was definitely a noticeable improvement in the overall skin tone and a reduction in pigmentation.

DAY 5-7: GLOWING RESULTS EMERGE
By the end of the first week, most of the peeling was complete, revealing a brighter, more even complexion. The skin felt smoother, and the initial redness had completely resolved.

DAY 8-14: CONTINUED IMPROVEMENT
The skin continued to improve over the next week, with a noticeable reduction in pigmentation, and an improvement in overall texture. Although it took a while to see the full effects of the treatment, it gradually became clear that BOXI offers a powerful combination of laser therapies for addressing pigmentation and generally achieving a healthier-looking complexion.

The number of treatments required will depend on your personal goals and the level of correction desired. Most patients receive 3-4 corrective MOXI treatments and 1-2 BBL treatments, then often sign up for regular maintenance treatments. The Dermology team can advise you on the best treatment regimen for your needs.
