Interior designer Amy Mitchell recently worked on this striking Ballito home. She let us know how she created a space that feels both luxurious and relaxing.
THE LOOK AND FEEL
The aesthetic in this dark and moody home blends sophistication with a cozy, intimate atmosphere. Rich, deep colours like charcoal, navy and tan create a dramatic backdrop, while layered textures, such as plush textiles, sleek leather, and warm woods, add depth and warmth. Ambient lighting enhances the moody vibe, casting gentle shadows and inviting a sense of relaxation.
Thoughtfully curated decor, featuring unique art pieces and natural elements, brings character and a touch of elegance, making the space feel both stylish and welcoming. This balance of drama and comfort transforms the home into a serene sanctuary.
CAREFULLY SELECTED DETAILS
The choice of materials and colours stemmed from the client’s desire for an intimate atmosphere. Rich, deep hues like charcoal, forest green and tans evoke a sense of drama while still being inviting.
Materials like velvet, leather, and dark wood added texture and warmth, enhancing the overall moodiness. Metallics and glass provide contrast and a touch of sophistication. The key was to balance the dark elements with softer accents, like warm lighting or natural fibres, to maintain a sense of comfort and elegance.
STANDOUT PIECES
At the top of the stairs, an original painting by local artist Grant de Lange makes an eye-catching statement, and elevates the overall look as it provides a beautiful pop of colour in the dark interior.
Other statement pieces include gorgeous custom pendant lighting by local designer Xavier Clarisse, made from leather; the delicious monster in the open plan dining area; as well as the two blade pendant lights in the main bedroom.
