Coffee raves are turning sunrise into party time – and we’re here for it.

Imagine walking into your favourite coffee shop just after sunrise, expecting the soothing scent of freshly brewed coffee… and instead, you’re hit with pumping house music, a live DJ spinning tracks, and a crowd dancing with espresso shots in hand. Welcome to the wild and wonderful world of coffee raves – a global trend shaking up morning routines, and now making waves right here at home.
Coffee raves first perked up in cities like Amsterdam, London and New York, where early-morning dance parties offered a fresh, sober spin on the nightlife scene. These events fuse the energy of a club with the comfort of your go-to coffee spot – minus the booze and the midnight start.

Why everyone’s talking about it

Sober socialising: The “sober curious” movement is booming, with people seeking social spaces that don’t revolve around alcohol.
Feel-good lifestyles: Caffeine-fuelled dancing gives you the high without the hangover.
Community vibes: Coffee raves bring people together – music lovers, early risers, fitness fanatics and creatives all connect before the workday even begins.

What to expect

These events typically take over cafés in the early morning, transforming them into high-vibe spaces filled with:
• Live DJs spinning house, techno and Afro beats.
• Specialty drinks like matcha shots and espresso mocktails.
• Interactive fun – from photo booths to live art and movement sessions

By the time the sun’s up, you’ve had your dose of joy, movement and caffeine – and still have the whole day ahead of you.

Coffee raves at Now Coffee, Umhlanga

Now Coffee in Umhlanga has become a community favourite – and they’ve recently turned their early mornings into something unforgettable. We caught up with co-owner Shaina-Rae Bauwens to get the lowdown on their buzzing new offering.

What inspired the idea to bring coffee raves to our area?
We saw it popping up overseas, then Cape Town and Joburg jumped on board – and we knew it was Durban’s turn. There’s a hunger here for real-life connection, and coffee raves offer something creative, non-judgemental and seriously fun.

Describe the vibe on the day – any memorable moments?
People really showed up! We had runners stopping by post-run, professionals on their way to work, even students before school. The highlight? Local musicians Cameron Höll and Calvin Human arrived with drums and just jumped in. It was totally spontaneous and took the vibe to another level!

Why do you think this concept is resonating with people right now?
Because it’s refreshing. You get to dance, enjoy music, see friends – all in a no-alcohol space. It sets such a positive tone for the day. People are leaning into health, mindfulness and intentional living, and this fits right in. It’s about joy, connection and starting your day with purpose.

What was the feedback like? Will it become a regular thing?
The response was incredible! So many people asked us to make it a weekly thing. We’re starting with once a month and have some exciting ideas for collabs with local DJs. We just want to keep making people’s mornings!
