As Group Infrastructure and Development Director at Auria Senior Living, Emma Hooyberg is passionate about creating spaces that go beyond design.
Emma believes that thoughtful design has the power to truly uplift how people live and connect. We chatted to her about what inspires her, the heart behind her work and what makes Coral Cove, a senior living community in Sheffield Beach, such a special project.
What inspired your journey into the world of development?
I’ve always been fascinated by the way spaces shape how we live, connect and thrive. My journey began with a curiosity for how thoughtful design and smart development can bring ideas to life, from concept to community. Over the years, I’ve been inspired by the impact that well-considered spaces can have on people’s lives. Development is a unique blend of creativity, strategy and purpose and that combination continues to drive me every day.
Creating spaces that uplift lives sounds so rewarding. What does that mean to you personally?
For me, it is about far more than bricks and mortar, it’s about dignity, joy and belonging. When we talk about uplifting lives, it is about designing spaces that enable people to live fully, independently and with a sense of connection. Personally, it is a privilege to play a part in shaping environments that genuinely enhance wellbeing and happiness. Seeing residents thrive because of the spaces we have created is the ultimate reward.
Coral Cove is such a unique development. What makes this project so special?
Coral Cove embodies everything Auria stands for; excellence, community, and care, in one truly exceptional coastal setting. It is not just about the location, though that is certainly a major draw card; it is about how the development integrates lifestyle, wellness and connection in a seamless way. From the thoughtful design of the residences to the vibrant social and care spaces, every detail has been considered to enrich daily life. It is also the first of its kind in KZN, and being part of that journey has been incredibly exciting.
How do you like to unwind or recharge after a busy week?
Spending time with my family is my greatest recharge, especially getting outdoors or sharing a good meal together. I also love playing padel. And, exploring new restaurants is one of my favourite ways to unwind.
What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you?
People are often surprised by how hands-on I am. I love being on site, understanding the nuts and bolts of a project, and seeing ideas take physical form. I am also a bit of a design and architecture enthusiast, constantly drawing inspiration from how spaces tell stories. And despite my structured, strategic side, I have a huge soft spot for creativity and spontaneity, whether that’s in cooking, travel or life in general!
