Set within the lush surrounds of Hawaan Forest Estate in Umhlanga, this home is a quietly confident expression of contemporary South African design.
Conceived by Bloc Architects, this home reflects a considered approach to both form and function, revealing itself through a sequence of carefully composed spaces. The entrance sets the tone, where a sculptural concrete-and-oak staircase, framed by a glass balustrade, introduces a palette that carries throughout. At its centre, a tranquil internal zen garden draws in natural light, softening the architectural lines and creating a sense of calm.
Layered living
Four en-suite bedrooms offer privacy and comfort, including a ground-floor guest suite that allows for ease and flexibility. The main bedroom extends onto a private balcony, while a generous dressing room adds to the sense of considered living.
Living areas unfold effortlessly, with the kitchen, dining and lounge spaces connected in an open-plan arrangement that encourages both everyday living and relaxed entertaining. A more formal lounge, aligned with the entrance axis, provides contrast, while an internal courtyard introduces greenery and light into the heart of the home.
Inside, outside, in between
The transition to the outdoors is handled with the same attention to flow. A covered veranda leads onto a marble-plastered pool and sundeck, creating a space that shifts easily between quiet retreat and social setting. The surrounding garden, designed in collaboration with Uys and White Landscape Architects, is both structured and organic, complementing the home’s architectural language.
Material choices – engineered oak flooring, off-shutter concrete elements and timber cladding – lend warmth and texture, while skylights bring natural light into more intimate spaces.
A considered whole
There is a sense of restraint to the home – nothing feels excessive, yet every detail is resolved. Light, proportion and materiality work together to create spaces that feel both grounded and refined, offering a contemporary home that sits comfortably within its forested setting.
