Mindful holidays: How to stress less this season

Festive season can be stressful for parents with all shopping and parties that requires spending. A look into ways on how to stay stress-free this festive season.

Holidays may be hectic, with office parties, family gatherings, shopping, and indulging in sugary treats. It is often said that the holidays are the most wonderful time of the year. However, for many people, this time of year comes with more stress, commitments, expectations, and expenses than any other time of year.

All of this adds up to less joy, less mindfulness, and less rest during the holidays. But what if things didn’t have to be this way? What if you made the holidays about “less” instead? Instead of getting caught up in the holiday rush, think about how a few simple changes might help you calm down, minimise holiday stress, and enjoy a mindful festive time. Holiday stress presents itself in the same way that daily stress does. You may feel depression, anxiety, insomnia, headaches, and irritability. Avoid allowing holiday stress to ruin your festive cheer! Being present is the best gift. Here are five mindfulness tips to help lessen the holiday stress.

Practice gratitude and kindness – Rather than writing your list of wants and wishes, write a gratitude list and feel thankful for all the things you already have.

Limit technology use – It may be tempting to share all of your holiday celebrations on social media but try to minimize your technology usage.  You might even save money by not being constantly flooded with offers and promotions!

Stick to your budget – It is essential to keep to your budget, even if you are tempted to overspend to make someone else happy.

Plan ahead – Planning ahead of time, by writing everything down or keeping a schedule, can allow you to focus and avoid overspending.

Treat yourself – Eating breakfast, sipping something warm, going for a walk, taking a bath, journaling, and taking time to rest are all great ways to nurture oneself during this season.

Each year seems to fly by, but remembering to rest more, stress less, and slowing down can help you have the most memorable holiday yet.
