“My journey started in primary school when my parents brought home our first computer,” he recalls. “I was fascinated by both the hardware and software side, spending hours exploring how things worked.” His early obsession became a lifelong passion, leading him into software development and eventually to his current role – overseeing project planning, development, and aligning tech with business strategy.
“The constant evolution of the tech landscape inspires me,” says Charl. “Every day brings a new challenge, a new tool, or a better way to do things.” Right now, AI dominates his excitement: “It’s opening up entirely new possibilities in how we think about business solutions.”
Though Bloemfontein isn’t Silicon Valley, its opportunities are real – if you know how to seize them. “The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to stay open-minded – opportunities are always out there, but you have to be willing to look for them and adapt quickly when they appear.”
For Charl, success isn’t just about professional milestones – it’s about balance. “When I’m working, I give it my full focus. When I’m with my family, I’m present with them. Achieving that balance between personal life and professional ambition is what success looks like for me.”
While technology evolves, human connections remain irreplaceable. “The people I work with every day have had the biggest influence on my career,” he explains. “I’m fortunate to be part of a truly exceptional team. We challenge each other, grow together, and constantly strive to do better.”
His typical day is a blend of strategy, innovation, and execution, involving planning and managing projects, communicating with clients, aligning development work with business outcomes, and exploring new technology trends – especially around AI, integration, and automation.
For young men entering the field, his guidance is clear: “Work smart, swim fast, and stay ahead of the wave. The tech industry moves quickly. Don’t wait for change – anticipate it, and be ready to adapt.”
Balancing a demanding career with personal life requires discipline. “When I shut down my computer at the end of the workday, I make a conscious decision to switch off from work. That time belongs to my family, and I protect it.”
For Charl, technology isn’t just code – it’s about impact. “Community is central to how we think about technology. Our solutions aren’t just about code – they’re about people. By understanding our clients’ needs, we build software that actually makes a difference in their day-to-day lives.”
His younger self had a different career in mind. “I wanted to be a train driver! While I never ended up driving locomotives, I now ‘drive’ business projects – and in a way, I’m still steering things forward.” To keep that childhood dream alive, Charl collects model trains instead.
