“I’m inspired by the opportunity to solve people’s problems through technology. I love seeing how our work makes a tangible difference and am motivated by bringing out the unique talents of my team to achieve that goal. Keeping the team dynamic and never complacent, fuels my passion,” said General Manager at Digital Platforms, Jaco Pienaar.
Pienaar mentioned that he began his tech career at a small software company, where he met two individuals who have been instrumental in his professional journey and with whom he has now worked for 15 years.
“I grew up in Bloemfontein, where I attended school and later studied programming at the Central University of Technology (CUT). My career began at a smaller dynamic software company (where I met Charl and Pierre), which gave me a strong foundation in the tech industry. Over time, I transitioned to working at Digital Platforms, where I now focus on solving real-world problems through innovative solutions,” he said.
According to him, being able to adapt and open to working as a team player is essential for thriving in business. He also touched on how being innovative always places you ahead of your competitors. “The biggest lesson I’ve learned is the importance of adaptability and collaboration. In a place like Bloemfontein, building strong relationships and recognising everyone’s unique contributions creates a thriving environment. Complacency is the enemy of progress, so staying innovative is key,” Pienaar mentioned.
The general manager offered advice for those who aspire to be in his shoes, highlighting that while education is important, it is equally important to develop strong communication skills and be open to collaboration. Which all forms part of his philosophy. “Community is central to my philosophy. I believe in leveraging the unique talents within my team and fostering a collaborative environment. In Bloemfontein, building strong local connections and understanding community needs help us create solutions that truly matter.”
With a hectic schedule like his, Jaco says spending time with family is something he doesn’t compromise on. “A typical day starts with family time. I spend my day collaborating with my team, brainstorming solutions, and ensuring everyone’s strengths are utilized. I balance strategic planning with hands-on problem-solving, and I make time to connect with my wife and kids in the evening,” he concluded.
