Thinking of traveling this winter? Read this first

Thinking of taking a trip this winter? But don’t want to get caught in the blues? Then remember to plan ahead to ensure that your trip is safe and warm enough so that you can focus on embracing the beauty of the season.

The Brown University Health Blog Team says conducting research on the climate or weather of the destination before you leave does not only help you for packing wisely, but can give you an idea of what kind of weather patterns to expect. It is important to pack items you can wear in layers to allow for temperature changes once you arrive. Packing accessories like hats, gloves, scarves, and waterproof boots can also help you keep warm and dry.

“No matter the time of year, never leave home without your medications, toiletries, some cash, and a phone charger. An extra battery is also a great idea as spending time in cold weather can reduce the performance of your device’s battery,” Brown University Health adds.

In addition, it is also important to protect your skin from harsh weather conditions, especially as winter can be extra tough on your skin with its biting winds and low humidity. “A good skin moisturizer along with a lip balm are vital for your winter excursion. And don’t forget sunscreen! You might not be laying on a beach, but the sun’s rays are still strong in winter, especially when reflecting off snow.”

To make your trip interesting, check out local winter activities at your destination to find something that will make your trip memorable. You can also speak to some locals to find out what they do to keep busy in the colder seasons.

“Winter conditions can be challenging and dangerous. Dress appropriately for the weather. Wear sturdy, non-slip shoes or boots. Be extra cautious on icy surfaces. Carry essentials like a first aid kit and emergency contact information. If you’re heading outdoors for activities, inform someone about your plans and expected return time.”

Don’t forget to take care of your health when travelling as well. Take the flu vaccination if need be, and always be prepared.

Tips for road trip safety in winter:

  • Know your route and have a physical map with you just in case your GPS isn’t working.
  • Have a winter survival kit with you in case you’re stranded, which includes non-perishable food, water, blankets, a flashlight, and batteries.
  • Refuel often so that your tank is never less than half full.
