Most of the South African National Parks (SANParks) are quite far from Bloemfontein and not well-suited for a weekend getaway. There are, however, a handful that are close enough to make them a practical weekend destination.
In the eastern Free State, near the scenic town of Clarens, you will find the Golden Gate Highlands National Park. The park is nestled into the foothills of the Maluti Mountains, making it a haven of natural beauty and cultural heritage. With hiking, horse riding and even some spelunking, it can be a great adventurous experience. Birders can enjoy the Vulture’s Restaurant bird hide, while those who enjoy history can explore the Basotho Cultural Village. The park’s latest attraction, the Kgodumodumo Dinosaur Interpretation Centre, offers a unique look into prehistoric times with fossil displays and interactive exhibits.
To the west of Bloemfontein, near Kimberley in the Northern Cape, you will find the Mokala National Park. SANParks’ newest park is located in an area that offers a variety of koppieveld and large open plains, where endangered species roam. The park offers a look at striking, twisted specimens ranging from small shrubs to towering trees. Mokala plays a vital role in the conservation of several endangered wildlife species, with its diverse habitats also attracting a wide range of bird species.
Should you wish to travel south to the Eastern Cape, there are two options near enough to Bloemfontein to explore.
The Camdeboo National Park, situated near Graaff-Reinet, features the Valley of Desolation. Towering dolerite cliffs and spectacular panoramic views of the plains await those who visit. The park’s unique Karoo location also features a wide variety of local wildlife, making it a photographer’s dream. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy scenic 4×4 routes, hiking trails and stunning picnic spots.
Another option in the Eastern Cape is the Mountain Zebra National Park near Cradock. Beautiful scenery and tranquillity await visitors, as well as an abundance of wildlife to admire. The heights of the Bankberg mountain range and deep valleys have become the home of many Cape mountain zebras, with the park being credited for saving these animals from extinction. A variety of other wildlife calls this park home, including black rhino, several species of antelope and even predators like cheetah and caracal.
Explore these unique destinations as weekend trips or even your next big breakaway, to appreciate what South Africa’s diverse national parks have to offer.
