The university narrative

You’ve made it. You’re officially a first-year student – with a student card, a timetable and a WhatsApp group buzzing with messages. From newfound freedom to first deadlines, here’s what no one tells you about navigating your first year of university.

The transition from high school to tertiary education is a big leap. It can feel exciting and liberating – but also confusing and stressful. Here’s some real talk to help you settle in, stay on track, and make the most of this chapter.

Show up – consistently
No one’s going to check if you’re in class. That freedom is great … until you’re lost in week five. Being present (physically and mentally) is half the battle. Engage, ask questions and build good habits early.

Find your support system
You don’t need a hundred friends – but finding a few people who ‘get’ you makes all the difference. Join clubs, societies, or study groups. Connect with your lecturers. University is about community as much as it is about books.

Use the resources
Most campuses offer tutoring, writing help, counselling, and more. If you’re struggling, don’t go it alone. Whether it’s mental health or math support, there’s no shame in asking for help. In fact, it’s smart.

Manage your time, your way
Tertiary life demands independence. No more teachers chasing deadlines. Use planners, apps, voice notes – whatever keeps you on top of lectures, tests and assignments. A little structure now prevents stress later.

Budget like a grown-up
Student life can be expensive – and that fast-food run every day adds up. Learn to budget. Look out for student discounts. And remember: instant noodles are okay sometimes, but nutrition matters too.

And … don’t panic if it’s not perfect!
