Lansers on Main… Really lovely bistro in Bryanston

‘If you like mushrooms, order the risotto’, we were advised, before we visited Lansers on Main. ‘Oh … and the tomato tart starter’s pretty amazing too.’ As we never ignore good advice, we did. And we’re jolly pleased … the tomato tart had the crispest, thinnest apricot mustard crust imaginable, with sun-ripened tomatoes and a touch of basil and chevre, while the porcini and black mushroom risotto with Parmesan and truffle oil was one of the best we’ve ever had (and trust us, we’ve had plenty). We dithered over the rest of the choices on the menu of this lovely bistro, which has a great mix of traditional French and Italian homestyle dishes, eventually settling on the chicken and courgette pie, recommended by chef Lanser Fourie. Another exceptional choice … and if you’re there on a cool autumn evening and it’s on the menu, do try it. Rave reviews, too, for the Belgian-style mussels and chips, and the steak tartare – hand-cut fillet with onions, parsley, capers and cognac. Lanser, who worked in some of the best kitchens in London and around Joburg before opening his own bistro, also has some stupendous puds on his menu … for those who’re following a gluten-free diet, order the chocolate tart … heaven! There are light lunch dishes, pizza and pastas and a small but lovely wine list.

Open lunch and dinner Monday to Saturday.
