Pink Derby Day: Support your team and a good cause, all in pink!

The 7th annual Pink Derby Day will see St John’s College vs St Stithians Boys’ College battle it out on the field while raising awareness for breast cancer.

In 2008, Luke Kuttschreuter, who was then in matric, approached Mr Martin Huysamer, deputy head, student affairs, to sell pink ribbons to the students at St John’s to raise awareness and funds for the oncology unit at a local hospital. He and his brother, Alex, had lost their mom to cancer a few years earlier. From these humble beginnings and after much brainstorming and tweaking over the next few years, the idea of a Pink Derby Day was formed. The impact of having two boys’ schools in Johannesburg support women’s health at their annual derby fixture goes a long way to heightening awareness and encouraging early detection. The hope is that this drive takes off between other traditional boys’ and girls’ schools in Joburg and beyond.

The school will be decked out in pink and spectators are encouraged to wear pink. The First XV Rugby and Second XI Hockey teams will sport pink socks, and the rugby posts will be “pinked”, as will the lines on the fields. The Pink Drive team will also be there to provide a mobile screening clinic, providing access to free scans for all. For a donation, you can also write a message to anyone you know affected by cancer on the Wall of Hope at the main entrance to St John’s College – whether honouring a cancer survivor, remembering a loved one who fought a brave fight, or celebrating your own cancer journey.

Saturday, June 22 at St John’s College. For all fixtures, visit https://sports.sjc.co.za/
