Zonda’s journey from adversity to entrepreneurship

In a conversation, Zonda Dreyer, a Springs resident of many decades, opens up about her remarkable journey, highlighting the key milestones and experiences that have shaped her into the woman she is today.

Zonda Dreyer, a resilient woman with a passion for helping others, has overcome numerous challenges throughout her life to build a successful career. Her journey began as a single mother raising three children, leading her through diverse career paths in the jewellery and mining industries.

One strong woman

Zonda’s career path wasn’t conventional. Balancing the responsibilities of raising three children on her own, she ventured into the jewellery industry and later explored selling technical submersible pumps to the mining sector.

However, the demanding nature of the latter role took a toll on her family life, leading her back to her passion for jewellery.

The turning point in Zonda’s life came in 2006 when tragedy struck, and she lost her eldest son in a car accident.

‘I was devastated but remained resilient. This is when I turned to my faith and found solace in my family and husband who became pillars of support,’ said Zonda.

Fuelled by the lessons learned from her life, Zonda pursued a correspondence course in trauma counselling, earning her qualification certificate two years later. Despite facing the severe impact of Covid-19, she came out stronger, determined to share her experiences and assist traumatised women.

Success is hard work

In 2022, with her husband’s retirement, Zonda and her husband ventured into the event venue, wedding boutique, and tea garden business in Strubenvale, Springs. They opened Zonskyn Tea Garden. Despite the challenges, their dedication and hard work paid off, turning the business into a success story.

Zonda’s fascination with creating inviting environments and her dream of owning a tea garden led her to step into the public restaurant business in January 2023. Her venture into this industry was a testament to her resilience and passion for creating memorable experiences.

Challenges were not missing from Zonda’s path, but with her husband’s unwavering support, she overcame them. It was about recognising the importance of collaboration. They faced the hurdles together, ensuring the success of their business.

Balancing her career and personal life, Zonda emphasises the significance of setting boundaries. With grown-up children and a supportive husband, she has managed to create a pleasant blend, cherishing the quality time they’ve created over the past two decades.

Desire to make others happy

In her spare time, Zonda finds joy and relaxation in reading, preferring the tangible experience of a physical book over digital alternatives.

Describing herself as a complete woman, she is tall, regal, and passionate about her family. She is honest, loyal and lives her life by her Christian principles.

She is driven by a desire to bring happiness to those around her.

‘Personally, I find fulfilment in making my family happy, while professionally, I am service-driven, taking criticism to heart and continuously striving for improvement.’

Reflecting on her upbringing marked by frequent school changes and various homes due to her father’s work in mining. ‘We moved a lot when I was younger,’ said Zonda.

The teachings of Jesus are where she gets her greatest inspiration in life.

Zonda is a mother of three and grandmother of three and describes motherhood as the fulfilment of God’s purpose for her.

‘Despite the hardships, I cherish the joy my children have brought to my life.’

A love story like no other

Zonda’s love story with her husband, Edwin, began in the mining industry. Their enduring 17-year marriage is built on mutual respect and continuous effort to allow each other the space to be themselves.

As Valentine’s Day approaches, Zonda and Edwin plan to celebrate with a grand event at Zonskyn, their business venture.

While not attaching themselves to specific traditions, they embrace the

romanticism associated with the day and celebrate their love every day.

In navigating challenges and keeping the romance alive, Zonda and Edwin prioritise private and quality time, engaging in ‘pillow talk’ and regular communication.

Their shared faith plays an important role, providing strength.

Zonda said even though she is a private, yet deeply caring person, it was

the hardships that have shaped her into someone who respects and values life.

‘I remain committed to giving my all to those in need, to my faith, and my family.’
