We catch up with Carmen Ramsden, principal and owner of The Hair Academy of South Africa, Alberton to chat a little about herself and to share some handy hair tips for Autumn and Winter brides.
Carmen has been in the hairdressing industry since 1992 and she describes her journey over the past three decades as nothing short of extraordinary.
‘From early on, I immersed myself in competition work, fashion shoots, and behind-the-scenes work on adverts – experiences that sharpened my skills and deepened my love for the art of hair.
‘The hair industry has opened countless doors for me. I’ve had the privilege of owning my own salon, gaining hands-on business experience, and truly understanding the challenges and rewards of entrepreneurship in this dynamic field.
‘Driven by a passion to give back to the industry that has shaped me, I transitioned into education. Teaching has become a powerful and fulfilling chapter in my career – moulding me into a stronger professional and giving me the platform to pass on the knowledge, insight, and skills I’ve gained.’
And today, as the owner and principal of The Hair Academy of South Africa, Alberton, she is committed to redefining hair education.
‘Our academy offers a cutting-edge curriculum that goes far beyond traditional behind-the-chair training. We expose students to the full spectrum of the industry – from editorial work and competitions to entrepreneurship and innovation – helping them unlock their full potential.
‘As both a business owner and educator, I am passionate about empowering the next generation of hair professionals, not just to succeed locally, but to open the globe to their talent.’

FIVE TIPS
- Weather-resistant styles
Autumn and Winter bring humidity, rain, and wind, so brides should opt for structured styles like elegant low buns, sleek chignons, or soft Hollywood waves that hold up in different weather conditions.
- Hair accessories and embellishments
2025 trends emphasise pearl-adorned pins, velvet bows, crystal-studded combs, and metallic headbands to add a luxurious touch while securing the style.
- Rich, warm hair tones
Seasonal hair colours like chocolate brown, caramel highlights, warm honey blonde, and rich auburn enhance the autumnal aesthetic and complement the bridal look.
- Textured and romantic looks
Soft, bohemian waves, braided crowns, and undone up dos remain popular for an effortlessly chic Winter wedding vibe, paired with cozy bridal fabrics like velvet and lace.
- Hair health and hydration
Cold weather can dry out hair, so brides should invest in deep conditioning treatments, scalp care, and shine-boosting serums leading up to the big day to maintain a glossy, healthy finish.
Amelia Skippers scored the highest points for the Wedding Box assignment and was responsible for styling, hair and make up. Lioni Birch, co-owner of Skinformation, modelled for her.
