Being a teacher

Nelson Mandela said, “Children of today are the leaders of tomorrow and education is a very important weapon to prepare children for their future roles as leaders of the community.” In honour of National Teacher’s Day, the team from Ashton International College Ballito share a few special things to remember about our teachers.

1. Teachers are arguably the most important members of our society. They give children purpose, set them up for success as citizens of our world and inspire in them a passion to do well and succeed in life.
2. While these incredible people fill an enormous role in the development of a student, it’s important to remember they can never replace the input of a parent.
3. Students come into contact with many different types of teachers across their school careers and, very often, there will be a teacher that speaks to and connects with them. Do you remember this one teacher from your childhood?
4. Teachers will stay positive for their students even when things can seem grim. The teacher-student connection is invaluable for some students, who may otherwise not have stability at home.
5. A great teacher always has compassion for their students, an understanding of their students’ personal lives, and an appreciation for their academic goals and achievements.
6. A teachers’ dedication is shown by their ‘round-the-clock’ work habits. Teachers don’t stop working when the school bell rings; they are grading papers, preparing lessons, mixing paint or cutting shapes. Parents also often need to communicate with teachers after school and on weekends. Most teachers arrive earlier than school starts to set up their day and provide extra assistance to students.
7. Passionate teachers teach beyond the syllabus. They are lifelong learners themselves, constantly growing and evolving.
A teacher is a professional, always upskilling themselves and participating in professional development sessions. The COVID pandemic was a period when we saw exactly how teachers went through steep learning curves themselves (while simultaneously managing their own stresses and anxieties).
8. Teachers are also human and sometimes make mistakes. But, any teacher will grow with constructive, calm criticism.
9. Remember, a hearty ‘thank you’ to a teacher goes a long way. A teacher who is appreciated will exceed your expectations.
10. Teachers, please know how important you are!
