Summer pet care…

While we all love the warmer weather, there are some important things to keep in mind when you’re a pet owner in the summer months . . .

1. Insects, pests and parasites thrive in hot weather. When your pet plays outside, they are exposed to fleas, ticks and mites (and parasites can flourish indoors as well).
2. As the season changes, irritants in the air increase. Instead of hay fever, though, pets can experience itchy, dry skin.
3. Another very important heat-related pet health hazard to be aware of is dehydration, which could lead to heat stroke and can be fatal if left untreated. Ensure you pets have access to drinkable water, especially when playing outdoors.
4. Ensure there’s a shelter for your pet in the event of extreme weather like rainstorms or heat waves.
5. Try not to walk your dog in excessive heat as their footpads could get burnt, especially on tar roads.
6. Consider using pet-safe sunscreen on light-skinned pets (ears, noses and bellies).
