STROOI: The first local film to cast Asian actors in lead roles

STROOI tells the story of Madelaine, a farm girl and school photographer from Dewetsdorp, portrayed by Izette Blignaut. Upon arrival in Gauteng, she encounters a handsome stranger, played by Jefferson Jīnlòng Lan, when her car breaks down.

Poor communication and a series of misunderstandings turn their encounter into a heated argument, causing her to refuse his help.

Later Madelaine is shocked to discover that the same stranger she encountered on the road is the best man at her best friend and her foreign fiancée’s (Danielle Retief and Chad Jones) wedding, where she is also a bridesmaid. Now, they are forced to set their differences aside to ensure the wedding’s success.

In true rom-com fashion, the film, directed by Jennis Williamson and JC Snooke and produced by Life-Etc, offers some laughs, tears and hilarious misunderstandings as the ‘wedding of the year’ unfolds.

Life-Etc, a division of Talent-Etc, is proud to announce the upcoming release of STROOI, a romantic comedy featuring a diverse cast, including the first combination of Afrikaans and Asian lead actors in a South African film.

“It is about time that we celebrate Asian representation in South African film and television, and we are honoured to pioneer this movement,” said Williamson and Snooke.

The film will be released on kykNET (channel 144) on 24 June 2023 at 8pm, whereafter it will be available on DStv Catch Up and Showmax.
