Five vitamins your skin craves in winter

Winter is here – the cold nights, cool days and dry air is already starting to take its toll on our skin, leaving it feeling dry, dull and prone to irritation.

Just like you change up your skincare routine and products to help protect, moisturise and nourish your skin during winter, so you should change your vitamin intake to keep your skin healthy from the inside out.

Make sure to include these five vitamins into your winter supplement regime to give your skin all the nourishment it needs to remain radiant, hydrated and healthy.

Vitamin A

  • Promotes cell turnover, which can become sluggish during winter.
  • Aids in repairing and rejuvenating the skin, reducing dryness, and improving texture.
  • EAT: Sweet potatoes, carrots, spinach, and kale.
  • TRY: Skincare products that contain retinoids or retinol, which are derivatives of vitamin A known for their anti-ageing and skin-renewing properties. We love Vitaderm’s Retinol Serum contains a 2.5% blend of Vitamin A derivatives that offer antioxidant properties to protect cell DNA and enhance skin regeneration.

B Vitamins

B vitamins, including Biotin (B7), Niacin (B3), and Riboflavin (B2), are essential for maintaining healthy skin:

  • Biotin supports the production of fatty acids, crucial for maintaining a strong skin barrier and preventing moisture loss.
  • Niacin helps improve skin hydration and reduces redness.
  • Riboflavin aids in the repair and regeneration of skin cells.
  • EAT: Whole grains, eggs, legumes, and leafy greens
  • TRY: A B-complex supplement.

Vitamin C

  • An antioxidant powerhouse that helps to protect the skin from environmental damage, including harsh winter conditions.
  • It supports collagen synthesis, which helps maintain skin elasticity and firmness.
  • Brightens the complexion and reduces the appearance of dark spots and uneven skin tone.
  • EAT: Citrus fruits, berries, leafy greens, and bell peppers.
  • TRY: Apply a vitamin C serum topically, such as our fave – Vitaderm’s Radian-C Serum, to enhance its benefits. The addition of hyaluronic acid increases skin hydration, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles with regular use.

Vitamin D

Reduced exposure to sunlight can lead to a vitamin D deficiency, which can affect the health and appearance of your skin.

  • Vitamin D plays a vital role in regulating cell growth and promoting a healthy immune system.
  • Adequate levels of vitamin D are associated with reduced inflammation and improved skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.
  • EAT: While sunlight is the primary source of vitamin D, you can also obtain it from fatty fish, fortified dairy products, and supplements.
  • TRY: Consult with your healthcare provider to determine if vitamin D supplementation is necessary for you.

Vitamin E

  • Vitamin E is a potent antioxidant that nourishes and protects the skin from oxidative stress caused by free radicals.
  • It helps to strengthen the skin barrier, locking in moisture and preventing water loss.
  • This vitamin is particularly beneficial for dry and sensitive skin during the winter months.
  • EAT: Almonds, sunflower seeds, avocados, and spinach into your diet.
  • TRY: You can also find vitamin E in various skincare products, including moisturisers and serums. We love Vitaderm’s Anti-Oxidant Cream that provides excellent protection against moisture loss. The formulation contains antioxidants including extracts of green tea, centella and Vitamin E to help prevent premature skin ageing.
