Spring: The perfect time to add retinol to your skincare routine

Retinol is all the rage…and for all the right reasons. Besides being a gold standard skincare ingredient, it can also help with various skin concerns including hyperpigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles and skin texture.

It can be incorporated into a well-rounded skincare routine alongside other ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, and sunscreen and, when used in combination with these products, it can enhance their effectiveness and boost overall skincare results.

As we move from winter into spring, now is the time to incorporate retinol into your skincare routine, as this is the ideal season to introduce this powerful product…this is why:

Less sun exposure: Retinol can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, which is why it’s often recommended for use in the evening. During spring, the sun’s intensity is not as strong as in the summer months. Starting retinol in spring allows your skin to acclimate to the ingredient and minimise the risk of sunburn.

Recovery from winter damage: Winter can be harsh on your skin, leading to dryness, flakiness, and redness. Retinol’s exfoliating and rejuvenating properties can help reverse this damage, leaving your skin looking refreshed and revitalised for spring.

Preparation for summer: By incorporating retinol into your spring skincare routine, you’re prepping your skin for the sun-exposed days of summer. It helps in achieving a smoother and more even complexion, making your sunscreen and makeup application easier and more effective.

The golden rule: consistency

Retinol needs commitment. Over time, it can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. One of our fave options is Vitaderm’s The Retinol Serum. This tri-active skin-perfecting formulation contains a 2.5% blend of Vitamin A derivatives, which offer super antioxidant properties that protect cell DNA and enhance skin regeneration. Remember to only apply the serum at night to a clean face and, when using any retinol product, it’s essential to use a sunscreen of at least SPF 30 as it can make your skin more sensitive to the sun.

If you are new to using retinol formulations, it’s recommended you do a patch test and introduce this product into your skin care routine gradually. We love Vitaderm’s Retinol Step-Up Programme to show you how to start your retinol journey.
