AFFORDABLE DESIGN

With a little expert input, it’s possible to create a stylish interior without breaking the bank.

Ballito-based interior designer Margaret Berichon has a passion for creating beautiful spaces. She believes that excellent design can be affordable. In fact, hiring an interior designer should save you time and money. Her and her team help their clients prevent costly mistakes by using reliable tradesmen and builders; avoiding mistakes during the construction process; integrating existing furniture into a space; defining a suitable style; negotiating better pricing of fittings and fixtures; and understanding how to use a budget correctly.

Margaret’s top tips
• In spaces like the kitchen, reduce drawers and opt for cupboards instead. This saves on hardware, as well as labour costs.
• Use veneers instead of solid wood in low-use items.
• There is a difference between cheap and affordable. Choose good quality fabrics and finishes to avoid replacement costs.
• Remember that a well-designed home increases the value of your property. When it is time to sell, no one will buy your home because you might have some good furniture. Finishes are key to profit.
• Good design takes time. Don’t buy an item of furniture just because you need it now, rather wait for the perfect piece before investing.
• Balance high and low-end materials.
• Closets, bathrooms and finishes such as flooring are the best items to spend your money on as they will add value to your build or renovation.
