Learning to let go

Thuli Mathebula, a former nurse and teacher based in Tongaat, recently published her first book. The memoir, titled Greathearted, tells her story of overcoming trauma and finding peace.

Thuli spent 11 years as a nurse in the paediatric ward at Alberlito Hospital, where she became a beloved mentor to many. Despite her outward strength, Thuli carried the weight of a painful secret: she was sexually abused twice at the age of 15 by students at her high school. Fear and humiliation, she says, led her to struggle in silence for years. “Everyone knew me at the hospital,” she says. “But no one knew my story.”

It was during the pandemic in 2020 that Thuli realised she needed to share her story – for her own mental health and to potentially help others. ” I didn’t want to die in vain knowing that I hadn’t let go,” she admits. “I wanted to heal. It took me 34 years to forgive.” Writing her book was a cathartic process, allowing her to confront her past and begin the healing journey. “Writing was very painful, but I feel at peace now,” she says. “It’s such a relief.”

Her memoir serves not only as a personal release, but also as a beacon of hope for others facing similar struggles. Thuli aims to change the perception of trauma and encourage open dialogue. Her goal is to advocate for anyone dealing with life’s challenges, offering her story as proof that healing and transformation are possible.

Before becoming a nurse, Thuli studied fashion and design. However, after the birth of her twin boys, she was inspired by the nurses who cared for her children and decided to pursue nursing. Her career at Alberlito was fulfilling but demanding, leading her to eventually transition to teaching. This shift allowed her more time with her family and provided the space she needed to write her memoir.

Thuli hosts regular events where she talks about her book and leads discussions on topics such as trauma and healing. Her next event will take place on 31 August at Viviswa Business Centre in Ndwedwe.
