SIMPLE PLEASURES

A dedicated wife and proud mum to two little girls, Catherine Gibson is also the owner of Palmar Collection, a Salt Rock-based company that creates and sources beautiful homeware.

“My roots are from the beautiful island of Mauritius, which has always been a source of inspiration for me,” explains Catherine. Raised in KZN, Catherine visited her family holiday home in Mauritius often as a child and has happy memories of family time spent around the table. She still loves the idea of celebrating life’s simple pleasures with good food and loved ones.
Salt Rock has been her home for the past 12 years, and it’s where she met her husband, Grant. “We absolutely cherish our community here – the beaches, the natural beauty and the relaxed lifestyle we get to share with our daughters,” she says. “The North Coast is a truly special place, and I feel so grateful to call it home.”

THE INSPIRATION
“Starting my own business was a way to blend my love for family, creativity and home life,” explains Catherine. “As a qualified foundation phase teacher, I wanted to create something meaningful that would also let me spend more time with my children and work on my own terms. Growing up, the dining table was the heart of our home. Family lunches would effortlessly roll into dinners, with the table brimming with loved ones, laughter, amazing food and endless stories. I wanted to capture that warmth and togetherness, honouring those special moments. I also saw a need for larger, reasonably priced tablecloths to make these gatherings even more beautiful.”

Catherine’s first range of linen tablecloths began with just six colours, but as the company has grown, she’s found joy in creating more playful items, adding embroidery, unique edgings and fresh colours to reflect her evolving style. “Each piece feels like a little tribute to my own cherished memories, and it’s so rewarding to see others create their own with Palmar,” she shares.

COMMUNITY AND CONNECTION
Supporting local artisans is at the heart of Catherine’s brand. “For me, it’s about so much more than just beautifully crafted items. It’s about helping to sustain local craftsmanship and building connections that make our community stronger,” she says. We’re blessed with so much talent right on our doorstep; take Gerald, for example, who creates the most exquisite baskets and place mats right here in Salt Rock.”

Whenever she spots something that catches her eye, she never hesitates to stop by the roadside and ask about embroidery or beading skills. “The talent in our community is astounding; it just takes a willingness to look around, reach out, and support one another. There’s something very special about knowing each product has a story behind it, woven by hands from our own KZN. Everything I sell is made right here, and I’m so proud to be a part of a circle that celebrates and uplifts local artisans.”

CATHERINE’S TIPS FOR SETTING A BEAUTIFUL TABLE
She believes that every gathering, especially during the holidays, should feel like a celebration.

Embrace the chance to create a little magic at the table! Start with intention – whether it’s with a new range of napkins and table runners or something you already love, set the scene for a festive, cozy atmosphere.

Add place mats for texture, sprinkle in some fresh greenery, light candles, and let it all glow. The beauty is often in the simple touches, and the joy truly comes from sharing the space with loved ones. So, don’t hold back – set a table that feels warm and inviting, and savour every moment spent around it.
