As the year winds down, what better way to celebrate than with good food, great company and a touch of festive flair?
We gathered at Makers’ Yard in Umhlali for a modern Christmas-inspired lunch from The Orange Tree that was equal parts chic and delicious.
Raquel Thomas, a Ballito-based event planner, stylist and owner of The Socialite, worked her magic, creating a stunning festive table that broke from tradition with its vibrant palette of pinks and pops of red – a fresh take on holiday décor that oozed contemporary elegance.
RAQUEL’S TIPS FOR THE PERFECT FESTIVE TABLE
CHANGE IT UP
When we do the same thing year in and year out, we often get bored and feel uninspired but by choosing something new, be it a colour, theme or mood, we start to feel more enthusiastic, motivated and driven to get creative.
OPPOSITES ATTRACT
The easiest way to create a full, beautiful and intentional tablescape is to play around with opposites. When choosing table decor like candles, vary between small tealights, different style pillars and tall dinner candles. Contrasting colours and opposing textures in flowers, linens and tableware are a great way to make your table more interesting.
HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS
Sometimes we have the perfect additions to put together a beautiful table setting right under our nose and already in our home. Don’t be afraid to add unconventional items to your décor, use some festive fruits like cherries, figs or oranges, gorgeous spices such as cinnamon sticks or star aniseed and plants or foliage from your garden. Add some fragranced elements to make your table a full sensory experience.
And, don’t forget the food…
No festive gathering would be complete without delicious food and the team at The Orange Tree went above and beyond. They served up an incredible range of nibbles, including mini roast beef Yorkshire puddings, beer battered fish and chips, brie and cranberry springrolls, spiced prawn and avo crostini and pineapple and coconut cheesecake. Yum!
