Heritage Day is a time to gather around the table, celebrate our diversity and enjoy the comforting flavours that form part of our shared identity.
For this Heritage Day-inspired shoot, every detail was thoughtfully curated to honour local entertaining. Chelsea Kuiperi, stylist and owner of House of Design, created a tablescape inspired by South Africa’s natural beauty, while Ciara Lambertelli, chef and owner at The Atelier Table, a private chef and catering service, designed a menu celebrating some of our most iconic dishes.
Setting the scene
Set on a warm wooden table, the styling embraced earthy textures and indigenous botanicals. Woven placemats, deep burgundy linen napkins and crisp white plates created an elegant, relaxed setting.
Instead of one oversized arrangement, a series of low woven baskets overflowing with proteas, pincushions, strelitzias and lush greenery ran the length of the table, allowing guests to converse easily across it. Fresh citrus nestled among the flowers added pops of colour while subtly reflecting the fresh, local ingredients featured throughout the menu. Wooden serving boards, beads and woven baskets completed the look, creating a table that felt abundant, natural and inviting.
Inspired by tradition
Ciara’s six-course menu celebrated familiar South African favourites with a refined twist.
Starters included warm mielie bread, served with whipped fynbos honey butter and biltong butter. This was followed by an elegant biltong carpaccio with smoked garlic aioli, capers, cumin-infused boerenkaas, confit onion, fynbos honey and balsamic dressing, served alongside toasted Castle Lager bread.
Comfort food took centre stage next with crispy pap croquettes filled with boerewors, paired with a creamy lager onion cheddar sauce, tomato chutney and grilled onion – a playful take on classic braai flavours.
The main course showcased lamb bobotie with fragrant yellow rice, silky butternut purée and carrots glazed with Mrs Ball’s chutney, paying tribute to generations of South African home cooks.
Dessert reimagined another local favourite with a beautifully plated milk tart featuring caramelised white chocolate, rooibos mousse, rooibos caramel and a crisp cinnamon sablé biscuit.
The final course was a comforting malva pudding, served with Cape Malay koeksister pops, caramelised orange and silky Amarula and vanilla bean custard… the perfect ending to a proudly South African feast.
