FREDDY L is a group of talented musicians – and they’re making waves on the North Coast with their unique sound, authentic energy and community spirit.
FREDDY L features three members: Freddy, the charismatic vocalist and writer; Reece, a powerhouse drummer and producer; and Niclaus, the talented bassist and producer. What started as Freddy’s solo project evolved into a cohesive trio. Reece joined the band after reaching out via Instagram, and Niclaus came on board after meeting Reece in Cape Town, while studying at a music college.
CRAFTING A UNIQUE SOUND
Freddy describes the band’s music as “alternative Indie soul” but says their sound shifts and evolves, reflecting their creative energy and diverse musical influences. All their tracks are original, offering audiences an authentic listening experience.
While differences in music taste sometimes spark debates, the band sees this as a strength. “It’s good to argue,” says Freddy. “It pushes us!”
MAKING THEIR MARK
Based on the North Coast has its challenges. Freddy admits that opportunities for live performances are often limited to bigger festivals or gigs in Durban. But the band turned this obstacle into an opportunity, creating The Kerb, a DIY music event series that began with pop-up gigs on makeshift stages.
Today, The Kerb is a thriving monthly event bringing together local artists, fans and businesses at 22 Sandra Road. From its humble beginnings on wooden pallets, the event has grown into a platform for diverse music genres and a hub for community collaboration.
LIVE AND LOUD
For the band, nothing beats the thrill of performing live. “We never sound exactly the same at any show,” Freddy says. Their ability to adapt to the vibe of their audience makes every performance unique.
With an album in the works and plans to tour internationally, FREDDY L is dreaming big. Europe, especially cities such as Berlin and Warsaw, is calling. “Our music does well overseas,” says Freddy, hinting at exciting opportunities abroad.
