With a brush in hand and creativity as her driving force, Petra Gevers transforms instinct into art.
When you look at Petra’s latest paintings, you see energy and movement. Her style is bold and unapologetic, a blend of intuitive brushstrokes and raw textures. “I think of it as drawing with a brush,” Petra says with a smile, describing her method. Every piece is an exploration of colour and form, with nature serving as her primary muse.
It wasn’t always this way. She initially studied architecture, but the discipline’s rigid structure wasn’t a natural fit for her. “I’m an immediate creative person,” she explains. “Architecture felt too long and drawn out.”
So, she pivoted, leaving behind the architectural drafts and diving instead into fine arts. After a brief stint overseas, Petra returned to South Africa to study at the Michaelis School of Fine Art at UCT. Cape Town’s vibrant and artistic atmosphere became the perfect backdrop for her budding creativity.
A KALEIDOSCOPE OF CREATIVITY
After art school, she began hand-painting fabric with Renaissance-inspired designs. Her knack for creating led her to co-found a business with her sister, making driftwood lamps and chandeliers so beautiful they even caught the president’s eye.
From whimsical children’s illustrations to experimental watercolour and pastel creations, Petra has explored a variety of mediums over the years. Each phase reflects her restless curiosity and an unwavering drive to create.
COMING FULL CIRCLE
After moving to Johannesburg and eventually back to her roots in KZN, Petra has settled back into painting full-time, and it’s clear she’s found her groove. Her art today blends spontaneity with a deep understanding of form and technique. She thrives on the immediacy of the first brushstroke, embracing imperfections as part of the process.
Her move to Sheffield has brought her closer to a like-minded creative community. “It’s wonderful to be supported and welcomed by the local artists and gallery. This is really helpful in building confidence and expanding one’s painting language,” she says.
Petra’s work continues to evolve, finding its way into exhibitions and private collections. For her, the joy lies in pushing boundaries – mixing her experience in design, illustration and fine art to create something uniquely hers.
