Salt Rock-based artist Paige Mullins creates dreamy pieces that pay homage to her tropical home.
For Paige, creativity runs in the family. Growing up with a mom who was often painting, she was always surrounded by art. But despite dabbling in it herself, she never fully committed – until life gave her a gentle nudge in an unexpected direction.
Originally from Durban, Paige moved to Cape Town to earn a degree in architecture before realising the profession wasn’t quite for her.
“It’s very much a desk job, and I wanted something more hands-on,” she says. This led her to a post-grad in entrepreneurship, and eventually, the launch of her own linen clothing brand, Larsen and Co. But through all of it, art remained in the background – something she would return to in quiet moments.
Then came motherhood, a transition that reshaped her routine and, unexpectedly, rekindled her passion for painting. “I think it’s important to have some structure when you’re at home with a baby. I needed something for myself.”
What started as a casual creative outlet quickly turned into something more. When a visitor at her parents’ home saw her work and wanted to buy it, she thought, “Why not?” Encouraged, she set up an Instagram page, built a website, and suddenly, her art was out in the world.
Describing her style, Paige says, “I love calm, soft colours – happy, dreamy spaces. It’s like painting somewhere I’d like to be.”
Living in a coastal, tropical paradise certainly plays a role in her inspiration, and her works evoke the gentle serenity of Salt Rock’s ocean breezes and lush surroundings. Her paintings are infused with a sense of tranquillity, often featuring delicate hues of green, pink and sandy neutrals. Inspired by the movement of the waves, the dappled light filtering through palm leaves, and the peaceful atmosphere of coastal living, her work captures a feeling of escapism and effortless elegance.
Despite her mother’s influence, Paige’s approach to painting is uniquely her own.
“My mom is a perfectionist, very patient with her work, while I’m the complete opposite. If something doesn’t look right from the start, I get frustrated,” she laughs. “But I’ve learned to trust the process, to let the painting become what it wants to be rather than forcing it.”
Since launching her art business just a few months ago, Paige has been overwhelmed by the response. “It’s been so encouraging! I sell mostly online and have had great interest from Cape Town and Durban.”
Balancing creativity with business isn’t new for Paige, who still runs Larsen & Co. alongside her art. But with painting, she’s found something deeply personal – something that both connects her to her roots and gives her space to grow. “I was feeling a bit lost after having a baby, and my husband said, ‘Why don’t you paint? I know you’ll be good at it.’ He was right – it’s been such a rewarding journey.”
