Umhlanga-based artist Kim Pereira brings nature, memory and a touch of whimsy to every piece she creates. We caught up with her for a quick chat about her creative journey and process.

Tell us about your journey into art – when did you first realise this was your calling?
I took Art as a subject at school but didn’t pursue it again until I started attending a weekly oil painting class with my cousin, Durban artist Dee Donaldson, at Artspace in 2010. I began painting full-time six years later.

How would you describe your style?
Contemporary. My current work is organic – I use plant material to print or emboss onto the canvas to start with. Then I add layers of paint from memory rather than reference, always thinking about composition and colour.

Tell us about your medium of choice.
My medium of choice is oils. I love their versatility, from delicate washes to thick, bold paint marks. Drawing is another big love of mine – I work in charcoal, pen and ink.

What do you hope people feel or experience when they view your art?
Intrigue and peace.

Are there any upcoming projects you’re especially excited about?
Alongside commissions I’m grateful for, I’m working on a portrait that I hope to enter into a Portrait Award contest. Most importantly, I’m focused on creating a cohesive body of work.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself.
I’m a twin – and I have my own set of twins!
