Know what to do in an emergency

The festive season is a time for joy, family and celebration – but it’s also, sadly, a time when cases of gender-based violence, assault and human trafficking tend to rise. Josha Daniel, founder of The Rise Up Movement reminds us to stay aware, stay safe and know what to do in an emergency.

IF YOU EXPERIENCE GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE
If you or someone you know is hurt or threatened, tell someone you trust right away. They can help you find safety or report the crime. Try to preserve any evidence, such as clothing, photos, screenshots or recordings, and remember, you have the right to seek shelter and get help. You can also lay charges and apply for a protection order.

IF YOU’VE BEEN RAPED AND REPORT THE INCIDENT WITHIN 72 HOURS
You are entitled to emergency contraception, treatment for STIs, a DNA collection kit for forensic investigation, and HIV treatment and support. All gender-based violence assistance is free and available to everyone.

WHEN YOU LAY CHARGES WITH THE POLICE
A SAPS official will take your statement and assign an investigating officer (IO) to your case. You have the right to be updated on the outcome, and you may be asked to return to identify the suspect. All cases involving children must be reported.

HOLIDAY AWARENESS: PROTECT YOUR CHILDREN
During the holidays, many children are home from school and spend time in public spaces. The Rise Up Movement urges parents to be vigilant: Keep recent photos and updated medical information of your children.
Teach them to set boundaries and never accept gifts, lifts or money from strangers.
Know where your children are at all times and who they are with. Encourage them to run, shout or seek help if they ever feel unsafe.
Ensure younger children know their full name, address and your phone number.
Awareness is empowerment and by staying alert, parents and caregivers can help protect children from potential harm, including human trafficking and abuse.
