Steven’s writing journey began close to home. “My son said that I have a depth of knowledge and a good sense of humour, so why don’t I write a book,” he explains. That simple suggestion planted the seed and before long Steven found himself bringing characters and stories to life on the page.
The result was The Adventures of the Inverlochy Gang, a series inspired by Steven’s Scottish roots and lifelong love of adventure stories. Set in a small village in Scotland, the books follow a group of young people who stumble into mysteries that are exciting, relatable and just a little bit magical.
For readers discovering the Inverlochy Gang for the first time, Steven describes the characters as familiar and easy to connect with.
“They are typical young people from a small village in Scotland,” he says. “Most children can relate to the stories, wherever they live, because of the mystery and adventure. Throw in a bit of time travel and you become one of the gang!” It is this sense of inclusion that makes the books so engaging for readers aged eight to sixteen.
At the heart of the series is a clear purpose. Steven hopes children see themselves in the stories and feel inspired by them.
“These are simple stories that most kids can see themselves involved in. There is fun, a bit of history, and good family values.”
Although the stories are rooted in Scotland, Steven’s creativity is now fuelled by life on the North Coast. “The North Coast, and especially Ballito, is a very relaxed place to live. Writing here has been so rewarding.”
