Safari photographer Jemma Wild is redefining what it means to travel with a baby, showing that motherhood doesn’t mean stepping away from the wild, but stepping into it differently.
Based on the North Coast, Jemma has spent the past seven years capturing the beauty of some of Africa’s most sought-after lodges. When she welcomed her daughter, Bradley, her approach shifted. Where many see motherhood as a pause, Jemma saw possibility.
Travelling through the bush with Bradley from just two months old, she has embraced a slower, more intentional way of working. Together with her husband Guy, she has since launched House of Wild, a safari company focused on helping families experience Africa from the very beginning.
How did becoming a mom change your work and travel?
It elevated everything. Before Bradley, my days were fluid – early mornings, late nights, chasing light. Now I work more consciously. There’s a rhythm. I plan with intention, I’m more aware of energy and pace. It’s grounding, and creatively, it’s added depth.
Bradley went on her first safari at two months. What was that like?
We were doing what we’ve always done, just with a tiny human along. She’d sleep on me during game drives, and when we stopped, she’d feed and carry on.
I remember one sunrise drive, looking at her and thinking, this is the best moment of my life.
What surprised me most was how easily she adapted. The bush is calm – the sounds, the air, the pace.
Do babies and safaris mix?
Yes, if you let go of the idea that safari has to look a certain way. It’s about choosing the right lodges and slowing down.
Bradley is one now, and those early months were some of the best. The benefits far outweigh the worries – nature, fresh air, and teams who genuinely welcome families.
Your top tips for travelling with a baby?
Choose calm, family-friendly lodges. Keep your days flexible and follow your baby’s rhythm.
Pack smart, but don’t overdo it – check what’s provided. And stay relaxed. Babies feed off your energy, and the right guides make all the difference.
A favourite moment so far?
Watching her see her first rhino at six months – arms flapping, making little sounds. I was completely undone.
One thing you never travel without?
A well-stocked nappy bag and her giraffe doo-doo, Gus. Something familiar makes all the difference.
A favourite family-friendly safari spot?
Marataba Safari Lodge – it’s exceptional for both kids and parents.
What has motherhood taught you about the wild?
That the magic isn’t only in the big sightings. It’s in the quieter moments. Bradley has reinforced that. She doesn’t rush, and it’s reminded me not to either.
