From a modest start in Durban, Harvey’s Auto Body Repairs has grown steadily over the years – shaped by hard work, family involvement and a commitment to doing things properly.

Harvey’s Auto Body Repairs began in 1967, when Hervé “Harvey” Maingard and his wife, Liz, set up shop in a makeshift caravan office across from Kingsmead Stadium. It was humble, hands-on and built on sheer determination.

Humble beginnings
Harvey was known for rolling up his sleeves and getting involved. His focus was simple: do the job properly, treat people well, and show up every day.

A family effort
It wasn’t long before the business became exactly that – a family affair. In the late 90s, Nicole, Harvey’s daughter, together with the support of her husband, Charles Barth, helped lead Harvey’s into its next chapter. Throughout that journey, Phillip Coles, affectionately known to everyone as “Ballie”, has remained a constant and respected presence, standing alongside Nicole for almost the entire journey. Having been with Harvey’s since 1994, Phillip has served as Head Foreman and has become far more than just a senior member of the team. He is a true father figure within the business; someone who has trained, guided, and shaped generations of Harvey’s staff with patience, pride, and years of experience. This includes Gerard Robertson, whom Phillip took under his wing when Gerard joined Harvey’s as a youngster.

More than just business
Today, the legacy lives on. For partner Gerard Robertson, it’s deeply personal.
“It’s more than just work; it’s something that carries our family name,” he says. “There’s a real sense of responsibility, but also pride in building on what’s already been created.”

Finding balance
Running a business while raising a family isn’t always seamless. “You have to be intentional,” Gerard explains. “Be present where you are – whether that’s at work or at home. And trust the people around you.”

Lessons in leadership
Fatherhood has had a clear influence on how he leads. “Patience, empathy, leading by example – those are things you learn at home, but they matter just as much in business. People do better when they feel supported.”
