Pierre Steenkamp is an avid collector of vintage memorabilia, with a focus on Coca-Cola items and model ships. His passion for collecting reflects a keen eye for detail and a deep appreciation for design, history, and brand heritage.
Pierre Steenkamp, Production and Project Manager at Digital Platforms, has built his career on a foundation of design and development, evolving into a key figure in the region’s digital services sector.
Pierre began his career in graphic design and web development before shifting into illustration and layout design for an educational publishing firm. There, he gained experience in both creative production and team management. “I worked with writers, artists, and educators. It gave me a practical understanding of collaboration across disciplines,” said Pierre.
His next move was to a web development agency, where he expanded his role to include project conceptualisation and sales. “We were a small team, so I was involved in everything: design, development, client pitching, and delivery,” he said.
A decade ago, Pierre joined Digital Platforms. Initially hired as a designer and web developer, he now manages production and projects across the company. His responsibilities include supervising teams, coordinating marketing campaigns, and leading client-focused software development. “My role shifted as the company grew. I now focus on ensuring strategic execution and delivery across all departments,” he said.
Pierre attributes part of his long-term success to the nature of Bloemfontein’s business landscape. “The city still values face-to-face engagement. You build relationships here beyond the boardroom, and those relationships turn into long-term partnerships,” he said.
He emphasised the importance of understanding client needs in detail. “You have to immerse yourself in a client’s workflow and objectives. Only then can you deliver a solution that’s both functional and aligned with their goals.”
Asked about what defines success, Pierre responded: “Professionally, it’s being valued for your input and execution. Personally, it’s having balance and the support of people you trust.”
Pierre said his team has been the greatest influence on his career development. “I’ve learned the most from day-to-day problem-solving alongside my colleagues. Those interactions constantly push our work forward,” he said.
He described his daily routine as fluid and fast-paced. “There’s no such thing as a typical day. We start with internal check-ins, move into sales or strategy meetings, and spend the rest of the day resolving issues or planning new development work.”
For young professionals entering the field, Pierre advised developing both interpersonal and technical skills. “Understand the people you work with, know your product, and stay curious about how different industries operate.”
He also highlighted the importance of maintaining boundaries to avoid burnout. “When the workday ends, I switch off. If you don’t manage that balance, your performance suffers,” he said.
Pierre noted that community plays a central role in his business philosophy. “We’re not just delivering services, we’re supporting local businesses and building long-term trust,” he said.
Though he initially considered a career in architecture, Pierre said the evolution of technology guided him toward digital media. “Design was a way to stay creative while adapting to digital trends. That eventually led to my current role.”
