Is a baby budget necessary?

Sticking to a baby budget can be a challenge, especially when everyone’s advice differs. Bianca Smit is currently pregnant with baby number two, and she believes it’s not necessary to follow a strict baby budget.

“I have a general idea of what the expenses are or will be, but I’m not following a strict budget,” she explains. “I definitely believe it can be beneficial. Being prepared helps reduce stress and allows you to manage your finances more effectively.”

If she were to follow a baby budget, Bianca says that she would divide the budget into two parts. “One for once-off expenses like strollers, car seats, and baby bedding – these tend to be the expensive items,” she says. “The second part would cover ongoing monthly costs like diapers, wipes, and baby food.”

Her tip for new mothers is to be practical with purchases. “You actually need a lot less than you think,” she explains. “The baby industry often convinces parents they need every gadget, but that’s simply not true.”

For those who choose to set up and stick to a budget, Bianca advises: “Shop around, look for deals, and talk to other moms about what’s worth buying. Focus on practicality over aesthetics or brand names. Discuss budgeting with your partner, and consider buying in bulk for non-perishable essentials.”

Bianca concludes:  “It’s best to start budgeting before the baby is born since you’ll need some essentials ahead of time. However, you’ll only truly understand the full scope of expenses once the baby arrives and daily life begins.”
