Over the past few years, solo travel has become a major trend – not only for adventurous spirits, but also for content creators and digital nomads. According to Solo Traveler, the trend continues to grow year on year. But what else does their data reveal?
Their annual survey shows that a large percentage of women over 50 choose organised tours and cruises for hassle-free travel.
The 2024 Solo Traveler Reader Survey included 26 questions. Over 80% of respondents were women, American, held university or graduate degrees, and were over the age of 55. Here is what their data showed:
- 22% had taken two trips in the last year, and 43% had taken three or more trips in the last year.
- 32% plan to visit Europe in 2025, while 19% are undecided on their next trip – leaving a large number open to influence on their destination.
- Price and safety were the top two factors influencing their decisions (77% and 76% respectively), with weather ranking third (58%).
- 75% take trips of two weeks or longer.
- 90% prefer an escorted tour some or all of the time; only 10% said they never take tours.
- The top two reasons for taking tours are:
- They can visit places they wouldn’t feel confident exploring independently.
- They can let the tour operator handle all the planning and manage the details at the destination.
- Price and group size are the two most important factors in deciding which tour operator to travel with.
