Lace up your sneakers, synchronise your fitness gadgets and get ready for the Suncoast East Coast Radio Big Walk in celebration of the diversity of movement. You can choose between the 5km or 10km distances and whether you’re a speed walker making a beeline for the finish, a social butterfly strolling with friends, or someone who relishes the scenic route accompanied by your favourite tunes, your starting point is uShaka Marine World. The walk continues past Suncoast and ends at the vibrant People’s Park Moses Mabhida. There will be loads of fun on the day with an array of activities on route, including live music, entertainment at the water stations and awesome giveaways. If you’re short of Mother’s Day weekend plans, or are keen to do something different this year, take a drive up Botha’s Hill to Talloula for an extra special Mother’s Day Supper Theatre, featuring Freshly Ground lead singer Zolani Mahola, on Friday, May 10. Challenge yourself to an extraordinary hike from Sani Pass to the Lesotho Drakensberg border to celebrate life! The Sunflower Sky Hike, established in 2007 as a tribute hike to honour Jade Preston who died of cancer when he was just eight years old, is held annually to raise awareness and funds for those with cancer. This year’s organisers, Mandy and Ian Tyrer are challenging the public to join them on Father’s Day, Sunday June 16, for the hike in aid of their son Jarryd Nurden. Jarryd is a talented theatre performer who was diagnosed with a rare carcinoid lung tumour in February 2023, the same day he signed up for his dream West End show, We Will Rock You. Jarryd underwent surgery to remove the cancer and is still in the healing process. Entry is R120 a person and proceeds will be shared with Jarryd, the Actors Benevolent Fund and NPO Rainbow & Smiles. All participants to meet at the Sani border post at 7.30am with passports. Dress creatively, with sunflowers, and challenge yourself to hike to the highest pub in Africa! Calling all art lovers! If you’re up for a weekend drive to the Midlands, head up to Harrington House in Hilton for Harcourts Hilton Art in the Country, where you can feast your eyes on the work of 62 featured local artists. You can also enjoy a bistro menu by celebrity chef Jackie Cameron or a picnic in the outdoors with live music. There will be a cash bar and ample parking. The exhibition runs from May 23 to 26. Doors open from 10am to 8pm Thursday to Saturday and 9am to 4pm on the Sunday. Entry is R30 an adult, R20 for pensioners and R10 or learners.
