Comedy, music, theatre and magic, this year’s Hilton Arts Festival is so much more than a drama festival. With the cream of SA theatre,the largest visual art exhibition in KZN, exciting arts-related workshops, fun activities and shows for kids, more than 100 makers in the upmarket craft area and the Retro Rides Revival display of classic cars, it ticks all the right boxes and more. There’s also loads of free music – including a performance by the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra and a music revue by internet sensations Adrian and Emma-Jean Galliard; street theatre to ensure that there’s never a dull moment, no matter where you find yourself over the weekend and a smorgasbord of food to suit every palate. Wonderbag Founder and CEO Sarah Collins will make a special appearance at this month’s KZN Women in Business meeting. Themed Resilience for today’s Women in Business, the meeting takes place on Thursday, August 1 at the Hellenic Community Centre, 6 High Grove, Umgeni Park. With a combined passion for thrift shopping and everything vintage, friends Vasti Mc Leod and Tania Daniel have built a fantastic community of women who all love fashion and the idea of sustainability in the industry. In celebration of this, they’re hosting their ninth fun and fabulous Never New Fashion Fair on Saturday, August 3, from 9am to 2pm at 124 a Fairway Drive, Durban North. It’s a fair where women can come and sell their gently worn fashion items – clothes, shoes, accessories and bags, and those in the mood for a wardrobe revamp can come and shop up a storm without breaking the bank. They’ve have gone back to their roots on this one and selected the top sellers from the last eight fairs to come and sell there lightly worn clothing. There is a good mix of sizes and styles, with lots of options for everyone. The Old Tin Can mobile bar will be on site, delicious pizzas will be available from Firehouse Pizza and LIV Village will have their coffee machines going. Details: Entry is R40 a person. Netball fans can catch their share of all the live action at the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Fast 5s Netball Challenge fixtures this month. The first tournament on Saturday, August 3 at King Edward High School in Matatiele will see teams vying to raise the KZN Southern Regional trophy. On Saturday, August 24, teams compete for the Durban Central Regional at St Henry’s Marist College and on Saturday, August 31, the Highway Regional takes place on at Hillcrest High School. Veteran comedy writer, creator and performer Melanie Kisten, has created a fun, new, high-energy, theatre show about a mother and her adult son, and a town full of gossip aunties. Created and produced by the Melanie Kisten Dance Academy and Big Ammas House of Entertainment, He Said, She Said, They Said celebrates women through comedy, dance and drama. Featuring Melanie Kisten, Desiree Kisten, Bhavanie Kisten, Krishna Subrayan, Lucian Govender, Kubeshan Kyra Kiki Naidoo and Elaine Govender, it takes to the stage at The Globe at Suncoast on Saturday, August 10 at 8pm. Stunning orchids and rare plants will be the stars of the show at the Fairway Orchid and Rare Plant Fair that coincides with the soft opening of the new restaurant 118 on Fairway in Durban North. Orchids, Staghorns, Bromeliads, Succulents, Palm Trees, Tillandsias, Nepenthes and more will be on display and for sale and The Natal Orchid Society will show off some of their beautiful orchids currently in flower. There will be potting demonstrations at 11am and 1pm, and experts will be on hand to provide guidance on nurturing. The event, which is suitable for young and old, novice gardeners and plant enthusiasts, is the ideal opportunity to brush up on your knowledge of these plants. The restaurant will open for breakfast and lunch, so you can enjoy refreshments and a light meal there during the show which takes place on Saturday, August 3 from 9am to 4pm. Entrance fee is R25 a person. Children under twelve enter for free. Tickets will be available at the Fair and there are some beautiful specimens up for the win! The venue is also wheelchair friendly.
