How to do a breast self-examination
- Look Stand in front of a mirror with your shoulders straight and arms on your hips. Look for changes in shape, swelling, dimpling or skin changes.
- Raise your arms Look for the same changes with your arms raised.
- Feel Lie down and use the pads of your fingers to gently press around your entire breast and underarm area. Use a circular motion and check for lumps or thickened areas.
- Repeat in the shower Many women find it easier to feel changes when their skin is wet and slippery.
If you notice anything unusual – a lump, change in shape, discharge or pain – don’t panic, but do get it checked out.
