How to do a breast self-examination

  1. Look Stand in front of a mirror with your shoulders straight and arms on your hips. Look for changes in shape, swelling, dimpling or skin changes.
  2. Raise your arms Look for the same changes with your arms raised.
  3. Feel Lie down and use the pads of your fingers to gently press around your entire breast and underarm area. Use a circular motion and check for lumps or thickened areas.
  4. Repeat in the shower Many women find it easier to feel changes when their skin is wet and slippery.

If you notice anything unusual – a lump, change in shape, discharge or pain – don’t panic, but do get it checked out.
