Jenny Bush creates a rustic wedding retreat

Jenny Bush turned her long-held dream into a reality with Kangelani Lodge – a tranquil, rustic retreat in the heart of Alverstone – where she blends heartfelt hospitality with natural beauty and where special celebrations come to life.

For Jenny Bush, Kangelani Lodge is more than a business – it’s the fulfilment of a dream years in the making. She first stepped into the world of hospitality in 2000 when she purchased a guesthouse in Summerveld. Though she had big plans, development restrictions meant that vision was put on hold. But Jenny never let go of her dream to own and run a warm, country-style lodge – one close enough to the city for convenience, yet surrounded by nature and peace.

When Kangelani Lodge came onto the market in 2015, she knew it was time. Nestled in the heart of Alverstone, the lodge offered everything she’d hoped for – scenic surroundings, generous space and a homely charm that was impossible to resist.

Now a lovingly run guesthouse with 14 beautifully appointed bedrooms, Kangelani Lodge caters to both quiet getaways and intimate special occasions. Weddings have become a signature offering, with the venue hosting small, meaningful ceremonies of up to 100 guests. From open-sky vows to poolside cocktails and laid-back lawn receptions, Kangelani brings a personal touch to every moment. “It’s all about connection, atmosphere and making people feel at home,” says Jenny. “You don’t need grandeur – just thoughtful details and a space that feels authentic.”

Adding even more flavour to the experience, Jenny has partnered with Liesel Purnell from The Good Earth Deli – a fellow female entrepreneur known for her fresh, vibrant dishes. Liesel’s catering is a highlight at Kangelani events, offering flavourful, soulful food that brings people together. “There’s nothing more memorable than a good meal shared with people you love,” says Jenny. “That’s what our weddings are about – joy, comfort and celebration.”

Kangelani Lodge also features a unique hidden gem – a private wine cellar ideal for intimate candlelit dinners. Whether it’s a romantic pre-wedding dinner or a special anniversary meal, it adds a touch of exclusivity to an already magical setting.

The lodge hosts regular open days and events. Guests are invited to a Women’s Day Celebration on 9 August, in support of the Animal Anti-Cruelty League, and a Wedding Expo on 20 September, where brides-to-be can experience the venue firsthand.

With her warm approach and attention to detail, Jenny has created more than just a guesthouse — she’s built a sanctuary of celebration and serenity. And for the many couples who’ve started their forever at Kangelani, that dream-come-true feeling is contagious.
