A hidden gem in the Berg

We discovered a restorative mountain retreat shaped by nature, heritage and heartfelt hospitality.

Tucked high into the foothills of the Northern Drakensberg, where sandstone cliffs catch the morning light and indigenous forests breathe out cool mountain air, lies The Cavern Resort & Spa – a retreat that feels more discovered than visited. As the flagship property of the Carte Collection, this beloved family-run lodge is more than a scenic escape. It represents a legacy of responsible tourism, conservation and deep-rooted community upliftment, woven through every element of its operations.

A recent three-night stay revealed just how seamlessly the property blends luxury with meaning. While many destinations offer rest, The Cavern offers restoration – of spirit, of connection, and of perspective.

A setting that immediately slows the breath
The first glimpse of The Cavern is a moment that settles into your memory. Surrounded by lush gardens, birdlife and dramatic ridges that frame the resort like protective sentinels, the property appears as a sanctuary carefully folded into the land. On arrival guests are received with warmth that feels instinctive rather than rehearsed – a hallmark of a place shaped by decades of family heritage.

Accommodation ranges from standard rooms to spacious suites, and the interleading units are especially well-suited to families or multi-generational travellers. These spaces offer multiple bedrooms, en-suite bathrooms, and tranquil views across gardens, dams and forested slopes. Many suites include fireplaces and private patios, creating a sense of calm and privacy that extends beyond the room itself.

Afternoons often begin with an abundant lunch featuring colourful salads, fresh ingredients and thoughtful combinations that reflect The Cavern’s approach to dining – plentiful, wholesome and ever-changing. After settling in, exploration becomes irresistible. Walking paths wind through the resort gardens, linking accommodation, the pool, the stables and the forest entrances. The landscape holds stories older than the lodge itself, with San rock art, ancient caves and a natural history that shapes the rhythm of the hills.

Evenings introduce a different kind of magic. On weekends, wine tastings bring guests together to sample South African favourites beneath mountain skies. Whether held outdoors in the sunshine or tucked inside the atmospheric Cave Bar on rainy evenings, these tastings offer a convivial start to the night. Afterwards, dinner becomes a relaxed ritual – a chance to reconnect, share stories and enjoy dishes crafted with balance and heart.

Adventure in every direction
Mornings at The Cavern begin gently, with breakfast spreads that include fresh fruit, homemade muesli, nut selections, stewed fruit and warm dishes that change daily. For many visitors, this is the gateway to one of the resort’s signature experiences – the daily Guided Morning Walk.

Led by experienced guides, these walks – including the popular Breakfast Walk – introduce guests to ancient forest paths, endemic birdlife, fresh mountain air and storytelling that brings the Drakensberg to life.

The Breakfast Walk ends with a picnic set against sweeping views of the Cavern Valley, where strong coffee and quiet contemplation pair beautifully with nature’s soundtrack.

For those seeking more adrenaline than altitude, All Out Adventures, located a short drive from the resort, offers high-energy thrills suitable for families and adventure seekers alike.

All Out Adventures is where teens enjoy quad biking, sky-high thrills and serious escapades

While the renowned six-stage Cable Tour sometimes steals the spotlight – featuring tree-to-tree ziplines operated via a guide-controlled braking system and reaching speeds of up to 60km/h – alternative adventures are equally exhilarating.

Quadbiking trails wind through wildflower-covered slopes, past waterfalls and across rugged terrain, and showcases the full majesty of the mountains. Skilled guides support both experienced riders and beginners, ensuring safety while encouraging confidence. Even young participants riding pillion are coached gently to step slightly beyond their comfort zones.

The King Swing, one of the most thrilling experiences on-site, invites guests to take a 17-metre freefall from a treetop suspension bridge, secured by multiple ropes and accessed via a spiralling 21-metre staircase. The rush is unforgettable – equal parts terror and triumph.

For a shorter burst of adrenaline, the All Out Adventures zipline offers a 21-metre climb followed by two cable slides that deliver heart-quickening speed and spectacular views.

Costs for these activities are R1 010 per quad for Quadbiking (passengers under seven ride free); R200 a person each for both the King Swing and Zipline (no children under 5) and for the Cable Tour (when operational) R810 an adult and R680 a child
(under 12).

However the day unfolds, the experience often becomes a highlight, combining a blend of courage, laughter, unexpected challenges and memory-making in its purest form.

Quiet dams and the excitement of the catch, fishing at The Cavern is pure magic for adults and young adventurers

Simple moments, slow afternoons and mountain magic
Back at The Cavern, time flows differently. Fishing at Darter Dam, stocked with tilapia and bass, offers hours of quiet joy for families. Little ones learn patience and skill, while adults savour the stillness reflected on the water. In the cooler months, trout dams – tucked higher into the hills – including Cowslip Falls, Top Dam, and Wattle Dam, become popular for catch-and-release angling. Guests are encouraged to bring their own rods, lures and flies.

For those craving indulgence, the Forest Retreat Spa is suspended among ancient ferns like a sanctuary carved from the trees themselves. Soft music and the sound of Putterill’s Stream create an atmosphere of complete serenity, enhanced by treatments using Esse – a local South African, cruelty-free, carbon-neutral skincare brand rooted in natural science.

Our favourite? The Forest Foot Massages offering a grounding experience mirroring the stillness of the forest canopy.

Self-guided walking trails are another way to ease into the landscape. Short strolls lead to echoing caves and fern-filled gullies, while easy terrain routes wind through woodland and grassland.

A gentle walk to the on-site waterfall provides a refreshing pause, and the trail to the natural pools reveals a picture-perfect spot for a swim, a picnic or simply reclining beside rushing mountain water.

The trail network includes

Grade S (Short Strolls): One to two hours, family-friendly

Grade E (Easy): Up to three hours, scenic and relaxed

Moderate to Hard (D to B): Longer challenges with steep climbs and chain ladders

Amphitheatre Trek: A catered, guided ascent to the 3,100m summit

Whatever path is walked, run or skipped (by fearless thrill-seekers!), the outcome is the same – breathing room, connection and immersion in nature, that cultivates a sense of presence rarely found in everyday life.

A place that stays with you

Leaving The Cavern often comes with reluctance. There is something quietly transformative about its environment … a softness in the landscape, a sincerity in the hospitality and a sense of belonging that lingers long after departure.

In a world where travel frequently impacts more than it heals, the Carte Collection shows that tourism can be both restorative and responsible.

The Cavern, in particular, stands as proof that meaningful travel doesn’t just offer beautiful moments – it creates a legacy of preservation, care and connection.

In a nutshell, this incredible place is not simply visited. It is carried home like a story, a sensation and a reminder of what matters most.

Community at the core… Through the Royal Drakensberg Education Trust, young lives are nurtured and reminded that they are seen and valued

Community at the core

Beyond hospitality, the Carte Collection invests deeply in education through the Royal Drakensberg Education Trust, specifically the Khanyisela Project. This initiative supports early childhood development in rural communities, providing resources, teacher training, and safe learning environments.

As Thobani Ndlovu, head of the Royal Drakensberg Primary School, describes:

“The Carte Collection’s involvement gives children access to opportunities that might otherwise be beyond their reach. It’s not just about education – it’s about showing these children they are seen and valued.”

This philosophy resonates throughout the guest experience. Each step taken on a trail, each meal enjoyed and each night spent under Drakensberg skies, directly contributes to a cycle of upliftment and conservation.

Hospitality with heart

The Cavern is only one chapter in the larger story of the Carte Collection – a trio of properties dedicated to preserving the Drakensberg, and uplifting the communities that call it home. Under this banner are:

Sungubala Eco Camp’s communal boma

Sungubala Eco Camp

An off-grid, solar-powered hideaway, Sungubala invites families and groups to reconnect with nature. With walking trails, mountain biking, star-filled skies, communal spaces and units surrounded by unspoilt wilderness, the camp provides an immersive, low-impact escape into the mountains.
