Colic & crying: Supporting babies with ease

There may be a gut-health reason behind your baby’s crying.

ProbiFloraTM, a multi-strain probiotic1 range, understands that parenting is the most rewarding job in the world – and also the most exhausting. Add infant colic into the picture, and those early months can feel truly overwhelming. But here’s the good news: understanding what’s happening in your baby’s gut – and doing something about it – could make a difference in easing colic symptoms4.

What is colic?

Colic is when your healthy baby cries for long stretches with no clear reason, and none of the usual soothing tricks, from rocking and burping to pacing and cuddling, seem to help.  It is most common in the first six weeks of life. While extreme crying can be very stressful and difficult on parents, there is light at the end of the very noisy tunnel. By six months, most babies have outgrown colic completely.2

Colic symptoms

Colic is more common than many parents realise, affecting up to 28% of babies. It is also one of the top reasons sleep-deprived parents arrive at the paediatrician, baby in arms and stress levels running high.3  Along with the crying, a baby with colic may also seem extra windy. They might burp a lot or pass more gas. You may also notice that your baby has a red, flushed face, has a tight tummy, pulls their legs up towards their belly and clenches their little fists while crying.2

What causes colic?

Experts still don’t know exactly what causes colic, but there are a few ideas. Some babies may be more sensitive to the world around them. After birth, they suddenly have to deal with lights, sounds, smells, feeds, cuddles, visitors and all the busy bits of daily life. Some babies take it all in their stride. Others need a little more time to settle in.  Another theory is that some babies are still learning how to calm themselves. Their nervous system is still developing, so once they get upset, it can be hard for them to wind back down.2

The gut connection

While we still don’t know exactly what causes colic, research suggests the gut may be involved. This includes the balance of gut bacteria, inflammation, and the way the gut and brain communicate.4  This is where probiotics may help, thanks to their anti-inflammatory properties.5
