Hillcrest’s Shaylize Gopal is proving that a crown can be far more than a symbol of beauty – it can become a platform for purpose, service and positive change.
At 19, Shaylize has already built an impressive portfolio as a model, pageant titleholder, Psychology student and youth advocate. Yet, behind the titles and accolades is a young woman determined to use every opportunity she receives to inspire others and make a meaningful contribution to her community.
Her latest achievement came during Women’s Month 2026, when she was crowned Lotus FM Women of Substance Youth Icon 2026. Being recognised in a category celebrating young women making an impact was particularly meaningful to Shaylize, whose journey has increasingly centred around empowerment, compassion and community involvement.
A former learner at Hillcrest High School, Shaylize received her modelling training from Roberta Alessandri Models and has developed her experience through modelling opportunities, fashion shows and entertainment platforms. Her journey has included participation with Ze Models International and the Big M Productions KZN Showcase 2025, among other platforms.
A journey filled with milestones
Shaylize’s pageantry journey has brought her a collection of titles and honours, including Heart of South Africa Supreme Queen 2025, Heart of South Africa Brand Ambassador, Heart of South Africa Public Choice Winner, Queen of South Africa Teen 2025 Second Princess, Beauty With a Purpose, PPMC Magazine Senior Brand Ambassador, Durban Model Search Winner 2026 and Fearless Faces 2026 Second Princess.
Another memorable milestone came on 15 August 2026, when she was crowned Miss Diamond SA 2026 and received the Diamond Elegance Award at the Diamond Women Celebrations, held at Radisson Blu Umhlanga Hotel , as part of Roshan Singh Productions’ 21-year legacy of celebrating and empowering women.
But for Shaylize, the significance of pageantry extends beyond the stage. Each title represents an opportunity to reach people, raise awareness and encourage others to believe that they too can make a difference.
Beauty with a purpose
Community service has become an important part of Shaylize’s journey. She has participated in initiatives supporting vulnerable children, women and families, contributing through food and clothing donations, school supplies, care packs and other outreach projects. Her involvement has also extended to animal welfare initiatives.
One message remains particularly close to her heart: no child should go hungry.
Through her platform, Shaylize continues to encourage individuals, families and businesses to contribute food and support organisations and initiatives that provide meals and food parcels to people experiencing hardship.
Her commitment to service has also been recognised through the Heart of SA Community Recognition Awards, where she received three honours — Woman in Pageantry, Woman in Charity and Heart of SA Ambassador, held on 1 August 2026 at Kwadukza Town Hall. These awards reflect the vision of Sharon Harripersadh, whose work focuses on recognising and celebrating women who contribute positively to their communities.
A memorable Women’s Month
August 2026 became a particularly significant chapter in Shaylize’s journey.
During Women’s Month, she attended and participated in several events centred around women, empowerment and community involvement. Among the highlights was the Lotus FM Women of Substance Awards, where she progressed from finalist in the Youth Icon category to being named the 2026 Youth Icon.This event was held on 30 August 2026 at Marbella Restaurant.
For the young Psychology student, the experience was about more than receiving an award. Being surrounded by accomplished and inspirational women offered an opportunity to connect, learn and gain a deeper appreciation of the many ways women can create change.
These experiences have reinforced Shaylize’s belief that empowerment is strongest when it is shared.
More than a crown
Shaylize hopes her journey will encourage other young people to understand that they do not have to wait until they are older to make a difference.
Whether through volunteering, supporting a community initiative, helping someone in need or simply using their talents to inspire others, she believes everyone has something valuable to contribute.
Her future aspirations reflect this same philosophy. As she continues her Psychology studies, Shaylize hopes to pursue a career in counselling while remaining involved in youth development, community outreach and initiatives focused on women’s empowerment.
For this young achiever, the journey is therefore not about collecting crowns – it is about what those crowns allow her to do.
Because true empowerment is not measured by the title you hold, but by the lives you touch and the difference you choose to make with the platform you have been given.
