Our dads can be notoriously difficult to buy gifts for, but Father’s Day is just around the corner and maybe the big man might enjoy something other than a socks gift box and chocolates.
Whether your budget allows for a delectable vintage wine or a present made from the heart, the four ideas below are guaranteed to be a hit.
For the dad who is a maintenance project wizard
Let’s be real, if he’s a pro at getting home maintenance and improvements done in no time then he’s probably already got every tool under the sun. If this is the case then he’ll make great use of a multitool maintenance kit to keep all of his beloved gadgets in prime condition. For example, if Dad is a Leatherman fan then he would love their carefully curated maintenance kit that includes a sharpener, cleaning cloth and brushes and lubricating oil. You could even take your gift to the next level by creating your own maintenance kit and source items by hand in your very own keepsake box. Taking the opportunity to gift Pops with something that aligns perfectly with his existing interests is a sure-fire way to make his day.
For the Dad who appreciates a taste of tradition
This Father’s Day, Buffalo Trace, the historic bourbon brand from the award-winning distillery of the same name, is encouraging you to honour the pillars of strength in your life with a bourbon-infused gathering. While nothing quite compares to the gift of shared moments and heartfelt conversations, a tangible token of appreciation speaks volumes, letting your father know he’s cherished. Their flagship offering, Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, is the perfect addition to dad’s home bar.
Crafted from premium rye, corn and barley malt, and then aged in new oak barrels reaching maturation with aromas of vanilla and mint, with a delicious palate of brown sugar and spice this paves way for a classic Father’s Day Old Fashioned.
Ingredients
- A dash of Angostura Bitters
- 1 sugar cube
- A splash of water
- 40ml of Buffalo Trace bourbon
- An orange twist to garnish
Method
Muddle your bitters, sugar cube and splash of water in a rocks glass until the sugar is entirely dissolved. Add the 40ml of Buffalo Trace bourbon and fill the glass with ice. Stir the drink until you see condensation on the exterior of the glass, which means that the temperature has adequately dropped. Top your Old Fashioned with more ice, garnish with the orange twist and cheers with pops.
Buffalo Trace (750ml) is available at a recommended retail price of R349.00 and can be purchased at selected TOPS at SPAR, Norman Goodfellows, PicardiReBEL, WhiskyBrothers and Takealot.
For the Dad who’d want something homemade
It can be frustrating dealing with a Dad who never gives out a wishlist, or tells you year after year that he doesn’t want anything for Father’s Day. Of course, the last thing you want to do is show up empty handed and you know he might just prefer something handmade and useful. Now that the Winter months have arrived, Dad will probably be making use of his fireplace, so why not surprise him with homemade firestarters to warm his heart and home.
Firstly, you will need to gather your kindling – think: small pinecones, twigs, dried citrus peel, cinnamon sticks and coffee beans. Next, place cupcake liners in a baking tray then melt wax pellets in a heatproof bowl in the microwave. Stir every 30 seconds until the wax is melted and completely clear. Dip the wick bottoms into the wax and place one in each muffin cup. Fill cups halfway with kindling, then pour wax over the kindling until 2/3 of the way full. Allow the wax to set for a few minutes, then add more decorative kindling to the top. Voilà, your gift is done.
For the Dad who loves some good vino
Perhaps your Dad is an oenophile of sorts and would absolutely relish the exceptional Amazing Grace Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 from Black Elephant Vintners. A tribute to fathers, father figures, and cherished memories, this wine is the perfect gift to celebrate and remember those who have shaped our lives.
The 2018 vintage, produced during the Western Cape’s fourth year of drought, boasts an intense dark purple colour with aromas of blueberry, blackcurrant, and cedarwood. The palate is fresh with defined tannins, promising to reward patient maturation over the next 8-10 years. Decanting is recommended to unlock its full potential.
